Work plane / reference plane set on pitched roof

I need to work on the lower end of a pitched roof which is visible in both level 1 and level 2 plans, what I exactly need to do is to add crickets with roof tools. I set work plane/reference plane on this roof , but I keep getting the following error messages whenever I try to use roof tool in both plans,

"The work plane of this view cannot be used for this operation. This operation should be performed in another view or the work plane of this view should be set to a level by using the work plane command."

I want to create a roof that aligns with the pitched roof not the level. Do not understand what I should do to make this happen?

However when I test with wall tools, no error messages.

Can you show a picture of what you are trying to model?

Use boundary line to draw a roof of triangle shape aligning the main roof and the triangle sits on the main roof

Yes, except the main roof stays flat. This is roof drain cricket and I will use sub-element to edit the points  to get the right slope.

Close. This is what it looks like in my work. I use tapered roof insulation and set it very thin. The point is can you make the sloped main roof as work plane and build the model on it?  I had no problem with working on slope by setting it as work plane when in Family editing environment.   Not sure why it doesn't work in regular model.  Thanks!

You can Model In-Place on the Work-Plane. You can host a Work Plane-Based Loadable Family to the Work Plane.   

...or you can do what I did. Shape edit a roof.

What do you mean when you say mine is "close"? How is it not exactly right?  Is the ridge to high? If so, lower it. Is too thick? If so, used a thinner roof type.

1.  I can't do model in place, not preferred in the project.  2.  I can't do family, it doesn't make much sense for the project, because there are tons of this in different shapes. 3. I did do what you did already, but when the cricket is big, the bottom extruded beyond the roof as you can see below image and we will end up editing the profile in individual views.  That is why I am seeking to set the main roof as work plane method.

So we can only use work plane in  "model in place"? If that is true, then it is too bad!

The "cricket" I did with Modify Sub-Elements is pretty darn big. 30' wide with an 7' ridge height.

Uncheck "Variable" under the Roof Assembly.

I need to set it variable. so when you cut section, it is filled rather than being hollow. The reason it extrudes downward is because this roof is 1 1/2"/12" compared with regular roof insulation pitch 1/4"/12". I am now make the cricket very narrow in stead of 1:3  proportion and kind of solve the issue.
