Window Sill Height

Hello everyone

I am having a issue with the window sill height. It looks like the parameter that controls the sill height for the window is an instance parameter, while the type parameter in the type properties doesn't actually change the sill height therefore, I have to change the sill height for each window individually.

I believe there is a way to make the sill height a type parameter.

Thanks for your help🙏

Edit family, go to Family Types under properties tab, Edit Parameter, check type parameter instead of instance parameter (and save the family/load back into project).

@Martijn.Pater the default sill height is already a type parameter.

Default Sill Height of a Window type sets the initial Sill Height of the window type instance when placed in a floor plan view, and give a guide when placed in an elevation view.  It, however, will not prevent you from manually changing the Sill Height of the windows already placed in the project, nor will it change the Sill Height of such windows in the project should you revised the type's Default Sill Height to a different value.  Default Sill Height is more like a suggesting dimension, rather than a ruling dimension.

If you want to change the Sill Heights of all the window instances of a type in the project:

- without any modifications to your family, you can set their Sill Height to a Global parameter

- or modify the window family to change the Reference Plane at the Floor Line to Origin; set Sill Height of all windows in the project to 0, and use Default Sill height parameter to control the placement height.

yes, so you can easily change the different height of your window beside height and width, already explained by @ToanDN thanks to him.

@ToanDN I don't understand the family edit. Please explain the steps.

I draw new RP for the sill and for the head and align and lock the sweep path to the new planes. It worked in the family editor but it still doesn't work in the project.

@dm0144

Following your PM...here is the fix for your family and the revised .rfa attached

  1. Unconstrain the sill ref plane and move up
  2. Add a new Ref Plane (between Sill and Floor Level) call it FFL and set as origin
  3. Delete the Old Height and Default Sill Dimension strings (using a temp ref plane - those are dims from the Family template)
  4. Add new Dimensions for Height and Default Sill then label accordingly.
  5. Load into project

NOTE: the OOTB instance parameter Sill Height = Offset of the entire Family from host level ie: the Distance between Host in Project AND Ref Plane FFL created in step 2 above

The Origin reference plane must not be the same as the Window Sill reference plane.  See the settings below.  Sorry I don't have 2021 to fix your family.

@ToanDN Can I than use the default sill height as a label to tag the sill height of the window. Currently, I am using the sill parameter as a label but I don't notice the default sill height as available parameter.
