Window parameters- Instance to type

I have downloaded a revit window family from my window manufacturer.

The width of the window is set as an 'instance' parameter so when I have gone to do my window legend, I can't get it to show each window width, it just reverts back to the default width.

I've tried to change the parameter so that I can just create a new window component for each style, however when I edit the window family to try change the 'width' parameter from 'instance' to 'type' it is greyed out. Does anyone know why this might be and how I can change it?

Or know of a way that I can get my window legend to display different 'instance' parameter widths?

Open a plan or elevation view of the window family where the Width dimension parameter is placed, select ot and change from Instance to Type from the ribbon.
