Window hosted wall opening phases

Hello everyone !

We are trying to find the quickest way to replace windows in a renovation project. In the projet, the idea is to demolish the existing windows, keep the hole and place a new window on the outside of the wall. We would like to have the plans of :
- the existing windows 
- the destruction plan with the existing windows in red
- the project plan with the new windows

The problem is that everytime you demolish an existing window in the new construction phase, it automatically creats a wall that fills the hole (wich you can't delete without deleting the existing window).

We did find a solution wich was to create a wall opening family in wich we place a window family where we deleted the opening. This way the opening is independend from the window. Although this solution isn't optimal. Every window needs to be resised according to the opening. 

Is there a way to host a window family in a hole and not a wall ? The idea is that the window resises itself according to the existing hole. Keep in mind that the hole needs to be in the existing phase and the window in the new construction phase.

In your case, the new windows are the same size as the existing windows.  As you noted, Revit fills in the holes created by demolishing windows.  Just place your new windows in the new phase in the previous position - Revit will cut new holes for the windows.

You could make you windows as face-based family, then you will be able to place them on the plane of the wall.

Another solution I thought of the other day that might work is to replace the automatically created wall with a transparent/air wall similar to the wall, you can then replace it in the new phase. But you'd have to create some filters for plans/sections probably. Never tested that yet though.

Why not just use the phasing tools for this?  Revit will cut an opening if a new window is placed.  No need for a work-around.

Yes ofcourse, but his question was if there is a way to host a window family in a hole.

Thank you for your answer! Only the window will be the same size but it will not be in the exact same position in the wall (you can see the position in plan in the attachement).

thank you for your answer. Face based, does it mean that I can put the window into the opening ? 

Can I create a window family that can adjust itself in function of the size of the opening ?

That shouldn't be a problem - the attached image shows a demolished window, with a new window in a similar but different position.

Thank you for your answer. The problem is :

- when you copy-paste in the same place a door it works, the opening is created in the new phase

- when you copy-pate in the same place a window it doesn't work, an error message comes up saying that it doesn't cut anything.

face-based families can be placed anywhere, just needs a plane to put it on.
but why don't you just place a new window in new phase?

Edit: you asked If you could create a window family that can adjust itself in function of the size of the opening, not sure what you're trying to do with that... do you have several sizes for these openings and you want to add some sort of window with instance parameters?
