I can think of a dozen explanations.  Let's examine your file.  Be easier than playing the guessing game.

As barthbradley said, many reasons to guess from.. But I'd probably give a shot  to either View Range Issue, or a Visibility Graphics issue, as those happens a lot with new users.. 

Check the visibility graphics (VG) or (VV) and search for Topography, turn it on if it was off..

Or check from the view properties settings (if you are in your siteplane view), search for view range, then edit, then make the cutplane above your highest topography point, and set bottom and depth to unlimited..
