The Door has to be a Curtain Wall Door not simple Door.

Select a Curtain Wall Panel ( using TAB) and then insert the Curtain Door Family

the best is to place the Curtain Wall Door , in an Elevation view facing the Curtain Wall, or (as in my screencast) in a 3d View...

From the Insert tab, when I load the curtain wall doors, they do not appear under the door types.

In the Project Browser, they do show up under Doors.  When you are using the Door Tool though, only doors that are wall hosted are shown.

When you select a panel in the curtain wall, you will see panels, walls and curtain wall doors.   Notice what I said there?  You can change panels to walls too, that way you can still host a regular door into a curtain wall.  Not the greatest of methods, but if you wanted a framed door in a curtain wall that is a method you can use.

In a curtain wall you are not "placing a door", you are "swapping a panel".

You are so right this is way harder than it needs to be. Even when selecting the curtain wall, it does not let you create a curtain wall door or storefront door of any type. They are under families menu under properties loaded, however it does not let you create instance.

try this workaround : change the glass panel that will host the door to a wall that looks alike the panel. then you can insert the door.

You need to select a panel, not the curtain wall.  Use the Tab button to cycle through until you select a panel.  Swap it for a CW door panel.

You are able to place a regular door family on a wall, so you could unpin a panel and replace it with a generic wall to which you could add your door family. This is probably not best curtain wall practise though, see reply Tim to use a CW door panel.
