For Large format drawings, it is important to remember there is a difference between Exporting PDF and Printing PDF. When you export a PDF, it contains a lot of data, content values etc., which is fantastic if you are after the BIM Data in your PDF. When you Print your PDF, the result should be a flattened print, without all the data behind it. The Printed PDF should be significantly smaller file size compared to exported, and will be a higher graphic quality.
Typically when opening a PDF in your PDF reader, if it is slow to open and render, slow to scroll and generally annoying, it is exported, if it is faster and more responsive, it has been printed.
