Wanting to delete family from Revit project, shows no instances but when I press delete it says "confirm delete, 1 instance in project"

As the title says, this has occurred for a few different families which I've been wanting to purge from my revit project. I'll right click and 'select all instances' and it'll show 0. but then when I delete the family, it says '1 instance in project'. Is this a normal feature? does this mean the family could be nested or used somewhere? are there checks to make sure I'm not deletign anything essential? Thanks in advance!

Are you referring to the 1 count that is shown under properties when you select a family in the Project Browser and press Select All Instances in Project?  If so, that's correct.  If there are no instances in Project, it will show ''1".

kind of, when I select all instances from the project browser it is showing as '0' but when I hit delete, it says 1 instance in project. Is that one instance just referring to the family itself?

I would not worry about that message. I think Revit needs to have at least one instance of some families, as defaults.

For example, some system families such as Stacked Wall needs to stay there in case the user needs to create a new stacked wall type. Without that, the user wouldn't have a starting point to start with.

oh, I see now.  You get this "1 instance" message upon pressing delete. Then you do have an Instance placed somewhere in the Project.  Maybe in a Design Option. Maybe it's nested in another Family?  There are a number of places it could be.

This is my first guess. We had a consultant purge the copy of our model they had linked into theirs, and it removed all of the door panels because they are a nested family driven by a shared <family type> parameter. Revit doesn't recognize these as being in the project, but it screws everything up when you delete them.

A door and a tag? Could be in a Group.

I have got a similar issue, placed instances in the project after purging all the unused model groups in 43 but when I try to delete the family type it says '74 instances of the family are deleted'. Not sure how to find those extra 31 instances. we have purged everything, no design options. thanks
