Wall schedule - Keeping materials in correct order

How can you sort materials in the wall schedule without referencing wall section views? I found a tutorial that suggests sorting by key value, but the same material appears in different locations within other walls. Or even twice like Gypsum Wallboard.

I see you have "Itemise Every Instance" ticked in the sorting Tab this will show multiple references

If you want each layer of the Wall Referenced in order you would need to have an individual material for each one so if you have 2 layers of plasterboard you need to 2 Plasterboard materials with an individual reference to each

After years of using AutoCAD, I'm trying to perform my basic tasks in Revit, and my first problem is the list of layers in all the walls in the project. In this case, the order on the list is important. Since I can't tag membranes, I can't replace my lists with images/sections. Duplicating layers due to required fire resistance has already cluttered the project. I haven't gotten to Dynamo scripts yet, but they would also work semi-automatically. Keynotes seems to work the same.

Ah! So the issue is membrane layers that have no thickness. Create Assembly and an MTO under Assembly.

Actually, if a Wall is using the same Material in different layers, that doesn't work either. You need to Duplicate with Assets the Material that is being used in another layer.

Do you have them in the correct order? My MTO has misarranged the order.

If Gypsum Wallboard appears in assembly twice - it only shows one record in MTO.

Material doesn't what wall layer it's on. You add a Parameter (maybe an Integer Type) and input a number and sort by that number.

Luckily, I found a solution that uses a modified file provided by "ROCKS engineering".

I added a new project parameter for walls called "multi-line text."

Their file lists all of the existing layers in a wall, in order, and includes chosen parameters (here thickness).

I inserted this data into my new parameter.

I drew the walls that I'm interested in on a new Phase.

I created a filter in Regular Schedule by Phase.

I inserted the filter into a sheet.

List includes duplicates and membranes.

BTW: There is a way to keep the Materials ordered correctly if you Create Parts from Walls and include the "Layer Index" Parameter Field in the Parts MTO Schedule.

One other comment: 

It sounds like you are doing a "Legend Phase".  We do as well. The Phase that you put the "Legend" components in is in a pre-Existing Phase (named maybe "Legend Phase") and those components that are created in this Phase are demo'd in a Phase immediately following. I suggest that that demo Phase for Legend components be another Phase that precedes your Project's true Existing Phase so that they aren't recognized as part of the actual Project (e.g. in QTOs, etc.).  So, create TWO Phases that exist BEFORE the true Existing and Construction Phases begin -- one Phase to create the Legend components and a subsequent Phase to demolish the Legend components.

Indexes need layers duplication.

Sorry it's 6AM and I just noticed field "layer index". I thought you placed manually constructed numbers in some sort of custom field which requires duplicating materials which all know is bad.

@marek_obajtek:  I think you're missing the nuances here.  The nuances are the TYPES of schedules.  As you can see in this thread, I too said that you'd have to duplicate materials, but I was talking about an ASSEMBLY Wall Schedule that can report zero-thickness layers, which I understood to be the objective (per your Message #4). Clearly, the solution you accepted does not report zero-thickness layers, so I have to assume that reporting zero-thickness layers is NOT a big concern after all.  A Parts Schedule will allow you to utilize the "Layer Index" Parameter to "keep materials in [their] correct order" (as per the title of your thread).  Parts Schedules was not mentioned as an option until I brought it up in Message #12.
