Wall patterns disappear when Phase Created is set to Existing

If I change the phase a wall was created in from New to Existing, the wall pattern disappears.

I've compared the settings for "Phase - Exist" and "Phase - New" and I the only difference is in Phase New, the cut pattern foreground, the pattern is set to solid fill. However if I change that same setting in Phase Exist, it becomes a solid grey hatch.

The only thing we've figured out that works is to delete the "Phase - Exist" material and leave that field blank for Existing. Is there something we're missing here?

Clear material Overrides.

Yes, I realize I can clear the material overrides, which is what I said in my post. What I'm trying to figure out is why Phase - Exist clears out the wall pattern when the phase of the wall is set to Existing. I'm also curious why, when the cut pattern  for Phase - New is set to solid fill, it shows the wall pattern but when the cut pattern for Phase - Exist is set to solid fill, it shows a solid grey fill.

Phase Exist does not have patterns assigned to it so when the graphic override kicks in because of the phase filter settings...patterns are not applied anymore. Since there are multiple categories of elements involved in a phase change no one pattern would work as a replacement for many possible materials and their patterns.

When the Wall is set to Existing (Previous phase) then Phase Filter overrides the wall with the Phase-Existing material.  The cut pattern and color are also overridden in the same Phase Graphic Overrides dialog.

Thanks to both of you! One follow up question. Is there a way to have Phase - Exist act the same way as Phase - New or is it just built into Revit that Phase - Exist erases all patterns by default?

@conor_tekautz

Check your Phase Filters.  The New graphic override is not used in any of my firm's filters, and I do not believe it is used in the out-of-the-box ones (but I could be wrong about that).  Instead, for filters that are supposed to show new work "as new work," the filter is set to By Category (so, no override).  If you assigned the New graphic override, you would lose the hatch patterns in your Walls as well, and just get a solid fill.

So it is not a question of why the Existing graphic override behaves differently, but an issue of the New graphic override not being used.

For what it is worth, we removed all of the Material overrides from the Graphic overrides.

Yes. Set the view's phase filter to Show Complete.

I'm unclear as to what the solution was. I'm having the same issue. My goal is to use:

For construction views, the "Show Previous+New" phase filter

For demolition  views, the "Show Preview*Demo" phase filter

When I do this, the wall pattern on my walls disappears on existing and demo walls.

Why do the wall patterns show on "New Construction" elements but not on existing or demo? I don't understand why the under the New Phase status, setting the cut pattern to black, allows various patterns so show correctly.

Below are my settings.

All of your Graphic Overrides set a Material on the override.  I doubt any of them have a pattern defined, and certainly not one that will match every pattern assigned to the visible layer(s) in your Walls.

Look at the Phase Filters tab.  What does it say for Show Previous + New and Show Previous + Demo?  For the out-of-the-box Revit 2025 settings, Existing and Demolished are either Overridden or Not Displayed.  New is either Not Displayed or By Category.  So your Existing and Demolished items will have that Material Graphic Override applied when visible, while the New items will display By Category, without an override.

If you want the overrides on linework to be applied (dashed or gray lines) but want to see type-specific patterns on your Walls, remove the Material Graphic Overrides for Existing and Demolished  on the Graphic Overrides tab.

I have 1 and 2hr rated walls, some need to be visible on existing as well as demo views. I've tried various combinations of settings on the Phases Filters tab, the wall pattern stays visible only on new walls. So far the only way to show my wall patterns is by using filters.

@David125

In the Phasing dialog, on the Graphic Overrides tab, for the Existing Phase Status, remove the Phase - Exist Material Override.  Do not override the Cut Pattern.  Then the cut pattern on the Wall Type should display.

You can do the same for the Demolished Phase Status if you want to see the Type cut pattern for demolished Walls.

In the image below, I created a Phase Filter to show Previous, Demo, and New, so that you can see all three side-by-side.  All Material Overrides have been removed, and the only Cut Pattern override on Existing and Demolished is to change the color of the Cut Pattern to 127-127-127.
