wall join to base floor - material takeoff

When I join a wall to the upper floor its core goes to the core of upper floor and it reflects in material takeoff while When I join it to the base floor its core goes to the core of floor but it doesn't result in material takeoff. What's the point?

There are three layers in the walls.. can you check volume for individual layers/material ??

Point you might be missing is keeping those. Layers in correct category like

structure

substrate 

and not in

air gap

paint/ membrane

Sounds like you are talking about typical Joined Geometry behavior.  Joined elements share the same line weight and fill pattern. When you use the Join Geometry command, the material of the first picked object is applied to both objects.

I still got the problem, you can see what I have done. Is there any possibility to have your sample revit file which considers the wall volume?

Hi

 

You are right when only the Floor and Walls are joined.. material schedule doesn't calculate the volume of 

extended material ( example Concrete )..So joining wall with floor is of no use for calculation..

This seems like a flaw in the Revit...

 

To resolve that, you need to modify the Wall, open up that layer and allow " Base extension "

this will update the material schedule as well as graphics in section..

am attaching images as well as uploading Revit file for you..

Thanks a lot. That works well. So I should do that for the upper level too.

As you said it seems like a flaw, Autodesk may consider a better way to solve it.

Yeah.. 

 

In a way Revit is giving us option to Either don't calculate automatically, or create Base extension and then calculate volume.... Just that its bit tricky..

 

Am sure there are consequences to do that automatically cause , considering this  one case..

1. Concrete part of wall merged with

2. Concrete part of Floor

3. and probably some 3rd wall or object with same material..

 

It will be tough to determine, which elements ( wall, floor ) those common volume of material belongs..

( there are few ways to get this right, join geometry, notch etc )

probably that why Revit is not giving automation for those calculation and forcing us to 

put base extension or model as per actual situation...

Yes, I see. So what is the solution for joining wall and column? I see this problem in joining wall and column too.

This should help in those case

 

Click Modify tab Geometry panel Join drop-down Switch Join Order. If you want to switch the join order of multiple elements with a common element, select Multiple Switch on the Options Bar. Select another element that joins with the first element.
