Urgent - "Top Constraint is invalid for the Level"

I am trying to draw a Wall form Level 0 to a superior Level 1.

Quite easy apparently but not in Revit, a "Top Constraint is invalid for the Level" error message pops up.

Any suggestions would be more than appreciated, thanks!

What have you set your top constraint to?  Can you post a screen shot?

Keith, the top constraint was a higher level.

Cant find out why at the begining it could not creat the wall. After couple of attempts I could do it but its not the first time I see it..

This is basic stuff and Revit is pretty solid in this respect.  there are things that it is a bit iffy with but basics like this are absolutely fine.  

The likelihood is that there is something wrong with the way you are creating your walls or the way in which your model is set up but without seeing it it's impossible to tell exactly what is going wrong.

In the options bar (on top below ribbon when you start Wall command) there is an option for "Height/Depth". If it is set to "Depth", Revit will expect a wall to be drawn from TOP to BOTTOM, and setting a "Top Constraint" in this case will actually be refering to the bottom constraint of the wall. Get it? its somewhat similar to Structural elements in the sense how they work upside down 🙂

Now when you dont have a lower datum than that you are placing the wall on or when the input you gave in the option bar contradicts with the properties dialog it will result in the a similar error cuz you would be telling the program to draw from top to bottom and at the same time telling it to place the end/top point either on a non-existing datum plane below the current one or "below" the base/constraint

Solution would be to change that Wall Placement on the Option Bar to "Height" instead of "Deapth" where you are allowed to set a Normal Top constraint above your Base constraint. OTHERWISE if you want to keep it set to Depth you will need to set a negative base offset (ex: -3000mm)

I need some more help with this. 
I am trying to draw a structural cast in place concrete wall and after I got the "top constraint is invalid for the level" error I found this thread. Just like pointed out , my wall is set to depth.

I have one additional problem though, it is grayed out.
Not allowing me to change it . (thanks revit) . 

Does anybody have a guess how to fix it ?

Hello, 

Apologies i am just learning Revit and when i am trying to create walls in a drawing it is coming up with the base constraints box on the bottom right stating ""The top of the wall is lower than the base of the wall". It will allow me to create walls on level 1 but not 0. I have tried resetting the constraints but i don't know any other option at the moment. 

I would really appreciate it, if anybody knows any commands to fix this issue.

What are your top and bottom constraints set to?  If you can post a screen shot of your settings it will be easier to explain where you are going wrong.

Hmmm, ok

I have just installed Revit, and haven't touched any of the settings. I open a new drawing, click wall, try to set it to level 0 and a pop up comes up notifying me about the constraint issues on the bottom right hand side. i will screen shot it to show you. I have tried to search on you tube how to correct it but i obviously don't know how at the moment and cant find a command to resolve it. I would of thought that level 0 would have been classed as drawing from ground level?

try to click reset constraints and see what happen? i think you will be able  to drop your wall. thanks

The problem is you have the base and top constraints of the wall set to Level 0.  YOu can either set this to Level 1 in which case the wall will extend from Level 0 - Level 1 or you can set it to unconnected and set an overall height.

If you are just getting started I'd recommend the first option.

Thank you for your message, are you able to provide information for the following issues.

- Top of the wall constraint is lower than the base wall- it will let me draw a wall unconnected and on level 1 but not on level 0.

-identical instances? I am trying to insert a standard column into a created grid and its saying there are already similar instances to which i cannot apply these columns.
