unpredictable cut/unable to cut between in-place-model2 (with attachment)

Hello,

it seems to be a old question long ago, now happend again:

i made two simple projects all the same --- a grey box (in-place) to be cut by a red in-place, but one can be cut, but the other cannot. (error "unable to cut a host containing instance"), but they two are the same.

anyone can see the difference between these two grey in-place box?

Thanks

nested family and in-place-model can not be cut, but a nest family with cut voids can cut the forms in current family.

hello @admaecc211151

mostly i have 2 in-place model can be cut each other. But the  attached family cannot be cut ("cannot cut an element with instance)

can anyone find what is the problem to the attached family?

quite unpredictable, ("unable to cut host with instance")

Thanks

attached are two files which almost the same, but one can be cut (grey box), the other cannot, (the red one is fine)

anyone can see the different between the two grey box? (one with error of "host containing instance")

"Wrong" one seems to cut okay using Join Geometry in the correct Join Order. No?

sorry. i thought you want to cut by void.

It seems that everything can join (and auto cut) with each other if the new geometry is big enough and simple to express.

(about 0.25mm thickness)

Maybe your join false is cause by that.

My arc wall and slope beam join false so much, either.

hello,

My attached 2 files are all the same, (just made for 2 different times),

but one can be cut, the other cannot, no idea what are the differences

Don't Cut. JOIN using Join Geometry tool. Join Geometry will remove geometry at the union.  Six of one; half dozen of another.

hello @barthbradley

ok i will use join, hope it is more stable.

BTW, after the grey box be cut, how can i export this grey box to the family while keeping the cut holes?

Thanks

@barthbradley

i will try join each other : A-B, B-C, C-A, should be a very good solution,

And to export these 3 pieces individually while keeping the cut hole, will be great helpful for wood structure.

Please advice, many thanks

You won't be able to save the In-Place modeled grey box with cut holes to a standalone loadable family since the holes are cut outside of the In-Place Family with another element in the Project.  You CAN save an in-place modeled component out of the Project Environment (RVT) to a standalone Family (RFA). To do this, Edit In-Place Component, Window-Select all the elements, Press Create Group button, name Group and save, and then right-click on the Group name in the Project Browser and press Save Group. Afterwards, exit out of Edit In-Place Component mode.

You could also Group together several In-Place Modeled Components and save that group to a standalone Project (RVT). To do this, right-click on Group name and press Save As.

hello @barthbradley

maybe i have to accept that, but any experience to take out many steel elements (made from in-place model and jointed/cut by other external in-place model) as individual elements (eg rfa) for 3D printing?

Thanks
