Unable to update template to Revit 2021

HI,

Well as title says. When i try to update our template to revit 2021 it crashes. Tried moving the template local so it wouldnt have network issues. Tried updating with Audit on also crashes.

This was the last step for us to continue working in Revit 2021.. the one i thought wouldnt be a problem but here we are 😀

Anyone any suggestions?

This kind of thing is not unexpected. I was told early on that updating a template from year to year could eventually lead to corruption and not to rely on doing that. Rebuilding it was strongly suggested. Along with updating families separately. Out with the old, in with the new. This could have caught and fixed minor issues and prevented this catastrophic failure.

Moving forward, I would suggest lightening up the template and find different ways to load up everything that you need at the onset of a project.

Not really helpful now but can prevent this from happening again.

I know that complete purge works..

but that still means having to rebuild the entire thing. i can have peace with removing all familys and loading them when needed. but i NEED the materials schedules linestyles viewtemplates  in the template and with that in the template it doesnt update.

I tried the following:

In 2020, save all the families out to a folder.

Purge them out of the template and save.

Open the file in 2021 and upgrade.

Load all the families back in, which updates them.

This crashed the project.

I split the famlies folder into two and loaded each set.  The second set crashed Revit.

I did the same with the suspect folder and loaded the next quarter of the families.

The with a small amount of families I opened each until it crashed.

It would appear that the one family that crashes the project is the one shown below.

Thanks for trying. I tried that approach as well. and yes it worked but the problem is when i purge a lot gets purged that isnt exported with families.. like materials and stuff. but when i leave those things in it still wont update... but i just tried the same approach again (maybe i did something wrong) but now Revit 2021 is completely broken it wont even start 😛 instant crash on boot.

To keep my workflow i CAN NOT purge. not purging means crash.  At this point i just want know why and what is broken. The problem is NOT with the families (i know some need updating) because if they are arent in the template the template still wont update. Its something else and i just cant find it.

Well then next, I opened the file in Revit 2020 and purged out the one family that I highlighted and saved.  I then opened the project in 2020 without any trouble.

I can't comment on why your Revit is crashing now.  My first try would be to reboot the computer and try again.  After that I would consider un-installing and reinstalling Revit.  Note other comments on this post with regard to Add-ins.  Perhaps try disabling these.

Well it would appear to me that the problem IS with the families.  You said that you purged them out, but I purged out a family that was in the project that you posted and the file seemed fine after that.

I GOT IT TO WORK....  I tried the steps you did again with our main template. i found 7 broken families including the one you found in the striped down version.  but the other 6 werent in the one i sent you.

AND i reinstalled revit 2021.. (maybe that did something)

But still i would like to know why it crashed with no families in it. but that something for autodesk support to find out...

I now have our 160 MB template working in revit 2021... (i will however take the effort to update all families to next versions in a separate location instead of in the template and fix them if needed to never have to deal with this ever again 😛

Cool - well done.

But you seem to insist that it wasn't a family, but clearly it was.  Some families still existed in the project that you posted, and the one I highlighted was crashing it.

Yes i know but i have a template with no familys in it. it was about 3 mb in size and it still crashed. only after using purge it would work.. very weird. (just tried it and it works also).

So i geuss the revit install was corrupt... Its so annoying because i couldnt find any error reports or logs. it just crashed. and now it works. (the old template with the broken familys doesnt work but i think we cleared that one :P)

This has become kind of a obsession. now i want to know what went wrong and why it suddenly works.

Anyways thanks for the help. But i am still going to try and find the error that kept crashing even without familys.

Go to your Autodesk Account Portal and open a Support Case on it. I'm thinking this might be connected to a couple of gremlins we have found in 2021 but haven't had the time to troubleshoot.  We're not using 2021 in production yet, so it isn't urgent.

Report back what you find.

Thanks.

Hello @Aryen_Jacobs,

It sounds like there may have been two distinct issues occurring:

  • System specific possibly related to installation of Revit (or a pre-requisite that was loaded during the reinstall)
  • Template/Project specific that was related to the family 74 hangtoilet met ombouw

For the second one, I am finding the following recorded in the Revit journal when the serious error occurs (removing the mentioned family clears the issue):

'C 30-Jun-2020 10:24:59.524;   8:< System exception in ADocument::regenerate

     'C 30-Jun-2020 10:24:59.524;   8:< executing step

     'C 30-Jun-2020 10:24:59.524;   8:<  element 5609910 of type Family

(Element ID 5609910 is for the family 74 hangtoilet met ombouw)

For the first issue, it would be difficult to troubleshoot if you can no longer reproduce the error/crash. One thing to look at would be the journals recorded when upgrading the template/project where you had removed the families.

Thanks for the journal tip. never knew they are so easy to get to an read. I looked at several that had crashes.

all have the same error:

' 0:< Exception occurred
'C 29-Jun-2020 15:41:03.101; 0:< ExceptionCode=0x80000003 ExceptionFlags=0x00000000 ExceptionAddress=00007FFE660FA138
'C 29-Jun-2020 15:41:03.101; BC: 0,0,1

This doesnt tell me anything but the error is gone after reinstal of revit 2021. (and removal of the broken familys)

I have found references to similar exceptions (ExceptionCode=0x80000003) when there are files missing from the Revit Program Files folder. Although without being able to reproduce those exceptions at this point, we wouldn’t be able to confirm if what you were seeing was the same thing.

If you do see this behavior and exception showing up in the journal, try comparing the list of files in the Revit Program Files folder between the system encountering the error and another not seeing this behavior. If a difference is found, then you can copy the missing files, and potentially identify the particular missing file causing the error.
