Unable to create most revit files through ctrl+N dialogue.

The hover text for File>>New implies you can create ANY new file through ctrl+N.

However, you are unable to create Families, Conceptual Masses, Title Blocks, or Annotation Symbols.

Suggested Fix:

Present the user with the option to create Families, Conceptual Masses, Title Blocks, and Annotation Symbols from the ctrl+N dialogue.

Alternative Fix:

Change the hover text to indicate creations of Families, Conceptual Masses, Title Blocks, or Annotation Symbols is not possible. Ex: "Ctrl+N: Creates a Revit Project File" Instead of "Ctrl+N: Creates a Revit File"

Use case:

I am creating a large number of furniture families to populate a floor plan. However I must click through File>>New every time I wish to add to it. It's a small time saver but a big quality of life improvement.

FWIW: There's a special forum for ideas.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/idb-p/302

I don't think anybody from Autodesk ever goes there though.

Kidding.

These files you mentioned need family templates to start with so what do you propose so that user can choose the right one?

And if you need to create a new File everytime just to add a furniture family on plan then you are doing it wrong.

Hi ToanDN,

I admit that I'm new to Revit. I'm tasked with modelling about a dozen pieces of furniture that I want to place on a floorplan. I also want these to be available in other floorplans. Your reply to this forum post indicated the way to do this was create a new revit family for each piece of furniture to be imported into. I would happily accept an improved workflow, what would be the correct way to do this?

The simple solution would be to have additional radio buttons where the create new:

  • Project
  • Project Template

Radio buttons are.

Thanks, that's useful I'll keep that in mind for more generic issues.

In my mind this specific is definitely a bug, as the text says one thing, but does another.

There already are radio button for New files.   Do you also want a menu full options when you CTRL+N so that you can choose what you need to create?

To create families, create one from the appropriate family template, add parameters, save.  Then save as to create the second one, repeat until done..
