Unable to bind linked as-built into Revit Template File

Hi all,

I'm working for a firm where we typically take as-built Revit models produced by a third party (as-built services), and link them into our default Revit template file, and then bind the link in so that we can then easily Demo/work on top of the as-built model.

On a new project, we got the as-built model and linked it in as usual, but then when we try to bind it, we get this error message linked here.

We asked the as-built company for help and they looked into it and were unable to resolve the issue, but this is what they said: "After doing some digging in the file, it seemed like there was something that didn’t want to copy over to the new file.  So I tried to do a ctrl C copy and it came up with this error message [linked here]" ... "So I used the select by id tool to select and then delete that picked path.  Then when I linked it, it at least tried to run the process instead of immediately quitting.  I didn’t notice until after that one of the messages in the middle of it was that it was unable to bind.  I am not sure if there is something else that will not come over that isn’t populating an error message.”

Does anyone recognize what exactly these error messages mean? What can we do to resolve this issue and get the as-built model into our template file? Any ideas? Please let me know if there is any other information that I could provide that would help solve this problem!

Not fully following you, but it sounds like they gave you another file to use in their original file - an appendment of sorts - and you loaded it directly into your project.  What about loading it into their original project directly, and then Reload the appended Link into your Project?

@Anonymous Thank you for your response, and sorry for any confusion. What is happening is that they produced an as-built revit model for a house. We are going to use that as-built model as the base for our expansion/renovation work, so we usually link and then bind the as-built into our template file. So it's just one linked as-built revit model that we want to get into our set-up base template file. Usually this works fine, but this time we are encountering a number of errors.

I can Group all the Model elements together in 3D View and Save that Group to an RVT -- and then Link and Bind and Ungroup that Link inside another Project.  

Result: 

...just to be clear: I opened your file, went to 3D Wireframe View, Window-Selected everything in the View and Grouped it. Then I went to Project Browser, found the Group and did a Save As.  The Save As RVT was what I Linked into new Project - and then Binded it and Ungrouped it.  Not a perfect translation, but Binding is always "messy".  That's why we seldom do it.

I have no issues binding it directly in Revit 2022 but I guess it doesn't help you since you are on Revit 2021.

@barthbradley  After reading your post I tried grouping it, saving the group as a separate file, and then linked that new file into our basic template file and bound it.... and it seems to have worked! I then ungrouped it and it looks like it all came through. I don't really understand why that worked to fix it, but somehow I guess it did! Thank you very much!!

That's strange that it seems to work fine for you in 22, you didn't get any errors or anything? I wonder why that is.. Anyway, I tried the other guy's suggestion using a group and it seems like it worked now for me, so I guess it's all taken care of for now! Thanks for the reply!

Actually, I was able to Link and Bind your original RVT in 2021. All I did was Audit and Purge All from it and Save it. Then I Linked it into a new Project and Binded (only Grids and Levels checked) and Ungrouped it.  Still a messy translation but, hey - it worked this time for some reason.  Go figure.
