Unable to associate family parameter to nested family

I've run into something odd.

I'm creating furniture combinations consitiong of chairs and tables.

For the chairs, I'm able to associate a material family parameter to it's existing parameters (family parameter, type).

For the table however it's not possible. Those parameters are family parameters (I've tried with shared but it's no difference). I already deleted the existing material parameters in the table family, but when I recreate them and reload the family I still can't associate a parameter.

Setting the material parameters as Instance works.

But I'd still like to know the cause of this behaviour.

The table is a shared Family. Type parameters of a shared family are designed to be set in the project, so you can't associate them in the family.
