Trouble placing a light fixture outside group edit mode

I'm having trouble placing light fixtures out of a model group edit mode.

We have model groups for each apartment type in an apartment building. We need to place a light fixture in the corridor and common areas, outside of the apartment groups. When we go to place light fixtures on face outside of a model group, an error comes up as if we are trying to edit model geometry inside a group, error seen below. All we want to do is place a light fixture, I should be able to place the fixtures without being in group edit mode, right? It seems odd! Did we load the lights in wrong or something? 

It isn't the light family we are using either, it seems to be all light fixtures, even the standard ones from the revit library. It's also only the lighting fixtures family category. I can place other families just fine.

I've seen this error before but only because I was trying to edit something in a model group without being in group edit mode. I just want to place light fixtures in the common areas! Please help.

if you Hide the group in view will it allow you to place the light on the wall?

No sir! I get the same error, unfortunately. 

It's just one specific group type. If I go into another group and try and place a light fixture, I get the same error.

It seems to be something is up with the one group type.

well, that's all i had.... LOL. i just tried duplicating it in a file i had open and i cant. The light fixture always places fine, even on a wall in the group. 

is the light Wall based, Face based, etc...?

I figured it out! 

There was one instance of the group type that got messed up somehow. So I deleted that group instance and replaced the group and I am now able to place light fixtures outside of edit group mode! Voila.
