Tricky one. Please help!

Hi all Revit gurus,

I work for a modular construction company and have been tasked with creating a model where each building module is a separate element that can be individually turned on or off as required.

Each module will contain its own floor cassette, ceiling cassette, walls, and associated finishes such as plywood and plasterboard. After researching the available options, I don't believe worksets are the right solution, as I won't be controlling visibility by category. Model groups also don't seem suitable for this purpose.

Another option would be to create each module as a separate model and link them together, but with approximately 160 modules in the building, that feels impractical and difficult to manage.

Has anyone tackled a similar requirement before or have any suggestions on the best approach? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that's a good one. No matter what you do - it's going to be messy. Families are the most flexible solution, but it highly depends on how the modules are made. Next-best would be separate models linked in a main model, IMO.

160 module instances feels like a good number for a linked model workflow, but that's under the assumption that that's based on maybe 8-16 module types.

If the layouts are boutique to the current project, linked models will get you there and allow for individualized visibility management. But if this work will get recycled in future projects, nested family construction might give you more tools for the future since you can install all sorts of descriptive or data-driven parameters and conduct the changes in the project model instead of in individual linked models. Family swapping is also much faster than link swapping, in the context of comparing layouts.
