Tools on Ribbon Greyed Out

I was trying to make some changes to my template file in regards to some schedules and for some reason part of the ribbon is greyed out. For example I was trying to shade a column and I just can't. This issue is across all projects I open and try to adjust. Any ideas what is going on or how to fix it?

Some buttons are only applicable to Key schedules i.e. insert data row...) and some other buttons only available when you do a specific task (group/ungroup header, etc...).
