Tips on site and building modelling workflow?

What is the most effective way of modelling both a building and a large site area?, is it better to model the site separately and then link in the building model or is it better to model both the site and the building in the same revit file? any advice would be match appreciated

I'm doing it separately :

1. a file with the building or several files each with their own building
2. a file with the site with pads 

In the site file (2) I link the building file (1), I do place the link on the desired position ( N-S, E-W, and Elevation, by moving and rotating it.

When considering the position satisfied me , I Publish the Coordinates to building file. Using this method, I am able to place multiple instances of the same building on different positions on the site and save these locations by Publishing them to the Building File ( it accepts multiple locations)
