Timber cut pattern

Is it possible to set the cross lines as a cut pattern for Timber in Revit as in  my image

Hi Vic1z,

Revit has two Pattern types for your cut pattern;

1. Model based: will always stay 1:1 scale

2. Drafting pattern: will relate to scale

To use a cut pattern to get what you like is almost impossible because you will need to create a Model based pattern for every type of timber that you will need and a material related to that size. (not the Revit way to solve this)

I would try to get to your result a bit different.

What if you open your timber family and draw two Symbolic lines in a cross on your Reference Plane (Center Left&Right).

Once drawn select de lines and make sure your Visibility/Graphics Overrides are on for all detail levels. (coarse, medium, fine)

De line is automatically only visible when cut.

This should give you your result.

Hi N. Oomen,

your suggested tip works as long as timber beam running at same level means perfect flat beam

when the beam starts to slope this symbolic lines starts to disappear. Not sure if its fixed in Revit 2017. Im using Revit 2016

Thanks for your help and is there another way to symbolic lines to appear if beam is sloping ???

you can do it in Structural Framing Family Editor by drawing , in Left/right Elevation two diagonald using Symbol Line.

Then , control how to show them from Visibility Settings

Once loaded into project , when you cut Structural Framing the two cross lines will be shown

Thanks for the screencast. It works well as long as the beam is running flat. but the symbolic lines disappears in section when the beam starts to slope.

If you want to see a pattern in the beams when they are cut at any angle, that has to be an override through VG > Cut Pattern column > Solid fill.

And, since it is not possible to find a surface pattern made of lines that fits exactly to the height of the section of beam that is cut at any angle, you need to use a simple solid fill.

Thanks for reply.

I have beams running flat and sloping. To be consistent I think I should skip what I want to achieve because Revit behaves differently when the beams slope.

not sure what causes to disappear symbolic lines when beam start to slope. Autodesk better fix this issue.

Hi Vic1z,

You are absolutely right, forgot about that one, but that does make me think about a workaround we created for a customer once.
In that case our customer wanted a similar thing and we came up with the following.

We built a line based detail item with your cross attached to it.
Length of the line based detail item would be the not “snap able” height of the beam, the with is the same as your beam with.
Then they would create an array to repeat it across the beam system in the section.
Every different beam with was a different detail item type.

Not perfect but worked for them. Hopefully for you as well.

A symbolic line is a 2D element. So it behaves the same as other annotation elements in Revit. I don't think there is anything for Autodesk to "fix" in this case.
