The project site is 50 miles from the survey point

I want to move the project base point to somewhere near the project site to keep the distance between them within the 20 miles limitation.

But when tried to do it, it show something like "the base point can't be moved further than 10 miles or 16 KM from it's original location"

How to solve it?

Leave the project base point at the default position. Unclip the survey point and move it to a benchmark on the site, such as corner of the building lot. Then clip the survey point.

@Anonymous

I understand you want to move the survey point (SP) instead of project base point (PBP). But if I do so, the project site would be more than 50 miles away from the PBP and the startup original point (SOP).

According to these threads Issues in Revit and Revit Coordinate System and project site setup

the site should not be more than 10 miles from SOP (maybe PBP) to avoid some weird problem.

I don't understand your case, then. The project base point should be where the project is and where the site is. If, after specifying coordinates on a benchmark of the site, the zero happens to be too far, you can unclip the survey point, move it to a benchmark of the site, and clip it again. That's all.

@Alfredo_Medina His case is that his project is roughly 50 miles off from the STARTUP origin...hence all the errors he is getting ... Issue not related to the project base point and survey point

@netsonicyxf i should be home in some 2 to 3 hours I will try to record a screencast on how you should fix it unless @Alfredo_Medina would volunteer to do that 🙂

till later ... Cheers

Please post a picture (if possible) showing the locaition of your site, location of PBP, and location of SP.

Usually, the site, project, and project base point should be together. The survey point can be wherever it needs to be (zero of the coordinates), or it can be unclipped and moved close to the site. No need to move the PBP.

I don't think so. The title of the thread is "The project site is 50 miles from the survey point".

I guess the user is confusing the terms.

His project's files are uploaded on the following post http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture/issues-in-revit/td-p/6399748 you can check them out and give it shot (there is also a printscreen of what he's got.

The error he is getting now is due to the fact that he is unclipping the PBP and trying to move it to the building/model and when unclipping the PBP, it is detaching from the Stratup Origin => hence the error when moving it too far off the Limit allowable in Revit. So yes he is confusing between Startup Origin & PBP

PS: I already relocated his model to where it should be but unfortunately I have no access to the PC where they are stored on because Í'm currently in a different State some 2000 miles away from home was hoping to get back last night but it got postponed

If he's built the model 50 miles from the startup origin is there an easy fix? I've had a user here do that once and it was a pain to fix....

You are right, there is an error in the title.  I will make it more clear in my first post.

What I really want to achieve is using the absolute coordinates in the project, e.g. the lower left corner of the building is 50 miles north from survey point (0,0),

I think I know how to achieve this in Revit, here is screenshot: 1.png

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you don't actually know what you are doing... but that's okay because getting the coordinates systems clear in your head isn't always the easiest thing for people...

you have 2 coordinate systems that you can control - Project and Shared.

the project coordinates are easy - you unclip your project base point and move it where you want it to be on your building - this gives you a 0,0,0 coordinate for your building.  this makes providing site dims easy.

The Shared Coordinate system is a bit more tricky but still relatively simple so long as you know what you are doing.  I generally find that having two files, one for your site model and one for your building (or more if you have multiple buildings on site).

In your site model you link in your survey data (use center to center) or something that allows you to locate your building in the real world - i.e. using eastings and northings.  Once loaded use the 'specify coordinates at point' tool to, well, specify the coordinates at a known point.  Check a few other known points to make sure you have this correct.

Now link your buildings in and locate them correctly on the site and simply publish the coordinates back to the linked building model.

Job done.

No worrying about how far anything is away from anything else.

You read my mind. Now I think I know how to do it in the next project.

But unfortunately in the current project, our out-sourcing people just did what you mentioned here:

" If he's built the model 50 miles from the startup origin is there an easy fix? I've had a user here do that once and it was a pain to fix"

these out-sourcing don't know how to fix the issue.

The community doesn't allow me to edit my previous post and title.

The title should be "The project site is 50 miles from the startup point"

that's a difficult position to be in - I'd be looking for those that did the modelling to fix the issue. I think the only way to do it is to select everything in a 3D view and then move it.

I'd be interested to hear @RDAOU's approach to this.

I followed your steps in the PM, but still have problem.

For the building.rvt, after I moved everything to the startup point (SP), I can't see it in the 3D view.

For the WSDS.rvt, I can't move the whole model even if I uncheck the "constraint".

Selecting and moving is one way...

Another would be to start New project (per. from a custom template)> Link c2c > set out the link > Bind > Ungroup

Which is less pain? It depends! The second leaves one out some cosmetics to do...the first can end up with a complete mess

I have no issues with the second (a good custom template save more than 3/4 of the aftermath

I tried your second "link rvt file" method, but I still have the same issues like before:

1. can't see my building in 3D view.

2. In the 2D plan and elevation views, after running "match to fit", the model is far away from the center of the canvas

That's because not just you building is modeled 50 miles from the origin...you have an element, a datum or some annotation which is flying far off...could be an something overridden by element or on a work set or link which is not loaded or... or ... or

you might be able to verify it in the elevations or sections...uncheck the option crop view and clear far clipping then zoom extent to locate the offending object. If you can't see it and/or select it then you might need to go through all the reasons which cause an object to b invisible/missing...without locating that object/element your issue won't be solved

I redownloaded your old file WSDS.rvt from your previous post ... so I hope you didn't modify it much since then (It's one week old)

  1. You had an issue with the levels... you can check that on the elevation if you check the no clip option + uncheck crop view. (To fix you just need to select those grids and maximize 3D extents
  2. The other issue you were having is because you were moving the model along with the crop regions...
    1. Use the site plan to select
    2. Uncheck crop regions as well as crop view
    3. Click the Reveal hidden items bulb
    4. On the properties of the view set "Show Hidden Lines" to All instead of by Discipline
    5. When you move the model...uncheck constrain and check disjoin (disjoin shouldnt be greyed out)
  3. Once done ... go through all your views a select the crop region >> right click it >> and  click "reset Crop region to extents"

And you should be good... I already moved it and it is attached with this reply. Please go through it and double check all is OK

PS: I will try to redo the Building.rvt for you just to have both inline with each other but not tonight sorry 🙂 maybe tomorrow during my lunch or coffee break
