Text Background Extending to Right

I'm having an issue with the background for text extending past the text to the right. This is causing a problem particularly in tags/families as the background covers other detail items in the tag. It happens in every project so it must be a system issue, not a type settings issue. I've tried changing the font and the leader/border offset and it has no effect. It's also always to the right, regardless of the text justification.

Looks like the background of the label is set to Opaque:

If that's what you want, you have to check if there are some fields in the label adding spaces.

Looks like the label has spaces added in the suffix of the parameter that's why it is always to the right and always the same amount.

I've had to turn off 'opaque' because of this problem, but I'd like to be able to use it. There are no spaces. This happens with all text with an opaque background, including annotation text boxes in a project.
