Synchronize Now vs Synchronize and Modify Settings

What is the difference between Synchronize Now and Synchronize and Modify Settings? Which is the preferred option?

It has been suggested that using Synchronize Now may be the reason for cyclical ownership problems that we have been experiencing lately. All checkboxes in the Synchronize and Modify Settings dialog box are deactivated in our build, so the user is forced to relinquish all borrowed elements. Does Synchronize Now NOT obey the settings in that dialog box?

Synchronize Now just doesn't show the dialog.  Whatever set before will be used.

Any other reason why Synchronize Now is painted as the villain in the piece?

@ToanDN Due be serious, man! Here I am, trying to give annoyed people a reason why they can't Sync Now!

They can't or you don't want them to?

Don't want them to. I've had to fix a couple of models where the cyclical ownership thing was happening. People couldn't sync because Revit told them that someone else had ownership of changed items. Don't want to do it again. My predecessor mentioned that Sync Now is the villain. Blogs that I have read say something similar, but the blogs have SyncandMod checkboxes active, so I can see the difference. And now I have coworkers who look like this -

Then quote the predecessor and the blog and tell the coworkers not to use Sync Now.  Add some flowery language to make sure they deliver.  The button is not default anyways so I am not understanding all the hisses.

As far as I know, Sync Now does not change what already set in Sync and Set.  If all the boxes are checked then all the boxes are checked.

The only times when someone cannot sync that I know of is when someone else is sync'ing at that moment, or someone opened the central file directly without creating a local.

Precisely what I have done. Thank you!

The difference is that Synchronize Now does just that: synchronize: (save to central and reload changes). It does not relinquish. Then you need to relinquish.

Synchronize and Modify Settings allows you to synchronize and relinquish at the same time, if you activate those options, which you should. Then you do all tasks at the same time, save, reload changes, and relinquish, all at once. So, Synchronize and Modify Settings, with options to relinquish should be the preferred choice.

Kudos to both @Alfredo_Medina and @ToanDN. If it was possible, I would have Fedexed  youelephants loaded with apes, ivory, and peacocks in appreciation....

This is not correct, as shown by other posts in this thread, and should not be marked as a solution.

Alfredo is partially correct...

Synchronize Now does not relinquish User-Created worksets. It does relinquish the other types of worksets and borrowed elements. It does not provide the dialog box that Synchronize and Modify Settings (SaMS) does (see SWC image).

I encourage everyone I meet to stop using Synchronize Now and only use SaMS because it provides an opportunity to see which worksets we've interacted with and more importantly (my opinion) to provide a brief comment. This way we can store a useful piece of information others can use later as it is available to us through Show History (see ShowHistory image) and if Revit Server is used it is available in the admin panel.

Did you really just create your account to post that criticism of someone expressing sincere gratitude?

Thanks, @RobDraw. Thank you for breathing new life into this ancient thread.

@shirley.bucknor - please catch up on your reading and read the works of P.G Wodehouse from which this quote has been taken.

Thank you for reviving this ancient thread, @SteveKStafford. I'm a little surprised that SyncNow is still on the ribbon.

Thanks Rina, didn’t realise it was a quote. And thanks for getting some clarification on the sync types.

Maybe I’ll read his books but until then we’ll continue to stand firmly against the ivory trade and I’ll continue to use the green sync button.

Why didn't you say that instead of berating a peer? Not so firm a stance, I would say.
