starting a project with an Architecture IFC model

Hi there,

I’m currently working with an IFC model provided by the architect. The issue I’m facing is that I’m not getting all the information when I link the IFC to my template. When I open the IFC and save it as a .RVT file, some issues are resolved, but I still can’t get the spaces to show correctly – no names, and some spaces are missing. Additionally, when the architect updates the model, those changes don’t appear in mine.

Any suggestions? I’m new to this process.

That depends on the LOD they used for the export (Extra Low to High), the property sets which they exported and last but not least if they exported rooms, areas and spaces from the 3D model. If you need that information, you need to explicitly tell them to export it.

Of course changes wont appear in your model. They are giving you an IFC that is not a published workshared model. Hence, with every update to their model, they would need to issue a new IFC which you would link and use as an underly in yours

another thing, for the best results, which method is the best while working with an ARC IFC, is it to link it direct to the model, or to save it as RVT and then link it as .RVT?

If you are not modifying the architectural model or if your scope falls under a discipline other than architecture, I recommend linking the IFC.

• When you link it to the model, a file named SameDocumentName.IFC.RVT is automatically generated in the same folder.
• The elements in this file will be DirectShapes with the same Revit category. Geometrically, they will be non-parametric, primarily to preserve the fidelity of the IFC model. You are not expected to modify the geometry of these elements but rather to work with them as they are.
• Additionally, a SharedParametersIFC.txt file will be created, containing all the datasets exported from the architect’s model.

Opening the IFC directly (File >> Open >> IFC) is beneficial only if the original model was a native Revit model and you wish to convert the IFC elements back to native Revit elements. There are some minor advantages to opening it directly, but they are not particularly significant.
