I want to show the treads and risers behind the stringer and a dashed /hidden line like the image below. I only see the stringer atm.

You got two options:

Option 1: If you are using Stair by Componant tool

1. Switch to Wireframe view
2. Go to Modify > View Tab > Linework
3. Trace the Stair using the line style you prefer

Option 2: If you are using Stair by Sketch tool (Doesn't work for Stair by Component)

1. Sketch your stair
2. After you finish Sketch > Go to View > Graphics > Show Hidden Lines
3. (1st click) Select Stair 
4. (2nd click) Reselct Stair again
5. It will look awkward at first ... Go to Manage Tab > Object Styles
6. Under Model Objects dialog scroll down to Stair
7. Expand the category using the +
8. You finf Hidden Lines
9. Change Line Pattern from Dahsed to Dot 2mm or Dot 1mm
10. Click OK to exit

This should give you the effect you want Screencast below for Option 2

use the linework tool located on the Modify Ribbon (shortcut LW) with 'Hidden Lines' selected as the line type.  

If you temp hide (shortcut HH) the stringer in your view and then click on the lines you want to be visible as 'hidden' lines.  Then reset your temp hide / isolate settings and you should be good.

Added Note to OPTION 1 (Didn't want to add this till the related Screencast uploaded)

• When you are picking the lines using Linework; (After each line you pick) do not forget to select the blue control grip at the line end and adjust to the bottom of the riser before you pick the following line. (you can not trim those lines later)
• After you are done; do not forget to Switch back to Hidden Lines view

You might notice that the outcome is not what you desire and the Line Style is not suitable. What you need to do is Create New Line Style; to do so:

1. Go to Manage > Additional Settings > Line Styles
2. Expand the Line category using the +
3. Do not modify those styles...Click NEW to create a new one
4. Name the new Style "Hidden Stairs" and click OK
5. Change Line Pattern of the new Hidden Stairs Line from Solid to Dot 1mm
6. Click Ok
7. Esc. twice
8. Go to Modify > View > Linework
9. Select from the Line Style drop down menu "Hidden Stairs"
10. Reselect the lines you did earlier
11. When done, Esc twice

And now you are as good as an Autodesk Expert Elite : o )

I am surprised of how helpful you guys are and also how still Revit is ultra complex like autocad and 3D max. I am not complaining but very curious as to why the most reputable software copany , autodesk , likes to add various layers of options and complexities to make it user unfreindly. At the course I am doing in Revit a few architects have even said they hate revit and forget it they just going to use autocad. Even the teacher gets bedazzled. Anyway , I am trying reveal the hidden lines of the stairs and after I hit view hidden line and then I click on teh stairs again it remains blue. I do exactly as you have shown on the video but it doesnt work. My stair is in sketch mode

There is no way I can hide the stringer by itslef. It hides the whole stair.

also aparently all dashed and dot lines are shown as continous line.

wever I found away to show hidden lines as you should turn transparency higher. But still all dotted and dashed lines are shown as simple continous line

Hey @Anonymous

When you double click it goes to edit mode 🙂 do it gently be nice to the stair the stair will be nice to you

1. When you pick it the first time; it highlights blue

2. Move the cursor away the back over the the edge of the stair

3 once u see the steps behind the stringer highlighting again (in darker blue) then u click

the hidden lines are showing solid because the scale of the step is relatively small for that style... You need to change view to a higher scale ex 1/10 or change it (line style) to a different pattern or create a new line style and give it the dot2mm or dot1mm patter as in the second screencast towards the end

then whats the other way to delet a line which I have created? other than chosing invisible line?
