Slow performance when dragging a level line grip in Revit

this issue has wasted a lot of my time.

I know I haven't found any fixes regarding this, only what you linked. I clicked on "no" this information was not helpful and added that the workarounds listed are a poor excuse to trying to help the end user.

We are not having issues here ... seems to works fine in 2022, 2023 and 2025. It is hard to tell what is causing it at your end but it may/could be due to various reasons without the model it is hard to check. Things which could cause this

  • Faulty installation
  • missing updates/patches
  • unhealthy model
  • accum. errors
  • random unoptimized workkflows
  • Graphics and/or DirectX drivers
  • Screen resolution
  • Model elements
  • faulty views
  • ...

@RDAOU how many elements do you have in the model? You may not experience this issue yet, because there aren't that many. Also most revit elements are associated with levels (well gravity), so sooner or later I suspect every user will come across this problem on a larger project.

I don't imagine that making a change to 3d level would be fast, but when levels are 2d and changes are only graphical (shorten level line in the view) it shouldn't be as slow as it is right now.

One can dream, but I would really welcome some input from actual revit developers on this forum. On Mcneel forum they respond to almost every question.

IMHO, the number of components is not a reliable metric for measuring model health and performance. You can have a perfectly functional model with 2,000 components vs a model with a single faulty, repeated adaptive component that crashes seconds after loading. Nonetheless, since you asked, this is an 820MB workshared Architectural & ID model of a Rehabilitation Clinic with 105 beds, detailed to LOD 300 (partially 400), hosted on ACC.

  • it consists of 3  x 2/4/8 Story Buildings
  • Structural and Services are modeled separately in six models, with the site (including furniture, landscape, and urban context) in another separate model.
  • It contains 320 Dscipline Specific fully parametric LOD 400 families (consisting of 1260 components)
  • it has currently 8 Design option Sets (with 22 design options)
  • Roof modeled in a separate model deu to extensive use of adaptive components.

This project is considered small to medium scale for us. We have ongoing projects that are far more complex

In my previous reply I was neither claiming and nor did I wish to imply in anyway that there are absolutely no issues but fortunately for us, within the environment we are running and managing our projects, from workflow to IT infrastructure, we are not experiencing the specific issue  post or the referenced knowledge base article. Performance can be slow sometimes (in specific views depending on the worksets open) but not to the extent of being overly problematic.

All I meant is to briefly suggest a few reasons which be causing this. Autodesk Knowledge base also has some articles on how to efficiently manage and maintain complex large scale project, some of which are quite good and useful.

just to confirm are you saying that on a 800MB model you are not experiencing this issue?

Yes that is what I said, at my end I am not having issues with that. But I did not say that there is no issue at your end. I do acknowledge that there is clearly an issue there on your side and I do wish I could help resolving it.

From my experience using Revit since 2007 till 2010 and 2014 till date I can assure you that a silly windoes policy can cause Revit to malfunction and hang. I had a somewhat similar issue just last week with Revit 2022 where out of the blues it crashed straight after Home screen loads and without having any models open

Just when I got fed up and was about to carry out a clean uninstall our IT team informed me that they modified a couple of group policies following the latest Windows security update and that for some reason messed up Revit 2022 completely and Background calculation process in Revit 2023.

Could you share a sample file to replicate that?

have you updated your first reply, I remember the original post only included an image. I can see now on the gif that building type matches closer to ours. I will test it on other machines, maybe it's a configuration issue.

Yeah I noticed it was a still image; therefore, I re-uploaded a gif, thought it might add more sense to what I was trying to say (it looks slightly slow but that’s due to the gif frame rate)

I find this issue to be very sporadic and can occur with small to large projects, local server based models, and ACC based models. The current project that I experienced this issue is very small and in-house on our own server. The model I'm working in is only 173mb and the linked model is only 18mb, and it doesn't always happen. Sometimes it will move just fine, other times I want to shoot myself and the computer. As mentioned earlier, I wish Autodesk developers would chime in more frequently and address issues that users face on a daily or almost daily basis instead of the issues that aren't occurring on a regular basis, but having used Autodesk since AutoCAD release 1.1 and knowing how they operate I'm not holding my breath.

This is a user forum, though. To distanced themselves from user drama in general and non-subscribers queries, they launched the Expert Elite program several years ago. This program recruited some users, awarded them badges to appear as legitimate Autodesk experts, and essentially left them to manage user interactions on these forums. A few of the EE were good but most forum participants, including Expert Elites, are not deeply knowledgeable about software performance, background processes, or system maintenance beyond what they can find through Google or ask AI tools like ChatGPT. Therefore, on discussions similar to this one, one should not expect much in terms of official support.

Previously, the main value some Expert Elites provided was escalating certain forum issues to the Autodesk support team. It's unclear if this practice continues, but after a three-year hiatus from the forum, I notice only a few of them are still around. Additionally, a new "Up Vote" button has been introduced, suggesting that Autodesk might intervene if a discussion garners enough upvotes.

If I were in your position, I would focus on opening support tickets and persist until the product works as expected. Autodesk has a substantial and capable support team, but you need to reach them through the appropriate channels. This forum is not the most effective avenue for that. One can always hope, but frankly speaking, onhow many discussion topics have you noticed an intervention from an Autodesk Subject matter experts or dev team?

I'm still hoping that there are some Autodesk employees that are driven and passionate about BIM software and would be willing to engage with the community (or build one in the first place if that's really the current state of things.)

They do, but that would be a rare coincidence. I am subscribed to 5 discussion forums and over the past 2 weeks I haven't seen any besides some forum manager asking the OP if the reply from another user solved the problem.
