Share object styles between families?

I work in store design, and have numberous fixtures that we use in store, each modelled in their own family. I want to be able to draw a boundary line around the family so that i can see it in plan view. I understand i am able to apply a object style to the line, so that i can turn it on and off when i like. My question is, i want to be able to give the bondary lines in each family, the same sub category so that when i load the families into a project, they all turn on and off together. Is this possible?

Yes. open the family in the family editor and you can create a new object style. Then you can assign this object style to your boundary line.

When loading this family into the project this object style will be added. If you add the same object style name to different families they will share this object style in the project.

One note Object styles are category dependent. So if you add an object style BNDRY to a casework family and to a furniture family it will show up twice in the project (once under casework, once under furntiure)

I assume there is not a way to set a object style to the master category, for example setting a boundary object style in the furniture category, so that whenever a furniture family is opened, the boundary object style is available?

No that is not possible. Revit can not know when you create a model line or extrusion in the family editor to which object style it should belong.

In the family editor you will have to assign objects (e.g. lines, extrusions, revolves) to certain object styles.

However you can do few things to speed up work.

You could modify the furniture family template and already add certain object styles.

You can create project templates and already add object styles to the different categories.

You can't make it a default when you open a family template file to begin work on, but you certainly can make it available when you do.

Just open a family template file, add the object stype or subcategory, and then save it right back on top of itself.
