Shadow Study on Topography

Hi all,

We have been trying to create shadow studies against existing topography, but we end up with these huge chunks of shadow cast by the topography itself shown here: 

Is there some way to make the shadow of the topography less visible? Or more accurate? We know we can simply cast the shadows onto a ground plane, but ideally we would like to cast it onto topography to get more accurate results on a sloping site.

less visible is easy you can open Graphic Display Options and under Lighting you can reduce the intensity of the shadow

More accurate/sharp/smooth is something which has to do with the hardware graphic performance
