Section Box for Linked Background Model in Autodesk 3D Viewer

Hello all,

I work for a Kitchen Equipment Contractor and our Revit work is always done with a linked Architectural model (by others). The AutoDesk 3D viewer is fantastic for allowing our PMs to review jobs, but we are running into a problem with jobs that have large buildings as linked backgrounds.

I can create section boxes for my 3D views in my Revit project, but when I upload to the viewer that section is not applied to the linked (additional) model.

Is there any way to limit how much of the Architectural model is shown on the viewer without actually deleting model content?

The problem is that many of our PMs are not particularly tech-savvy, and we want to make things as simple to access as possible.

I have attached a couple of screenshots for reference, and thanks in advance.

You can export the 3D view to FBX or DWF and upload them to Autodesk Viewer.  They will show with the proper section box.

Thanks! We have done this but I should have mentioned we wanted our projects on the viewer to have both the 3D model and the 2D rough-in drawings so markups can be done all in one place. Is there a way to put both the export file and our 2D sheets in the same upload?

I think Autodesk Viewer uses the default {3D} view so you can apply a section box to that view.

However, it does not work with work shared file because Revit always append user name to the view {3D - username}.  To make it work, you need to open a copy of the model, with Detach and discard worksets, to create a non-work shared file, create a default {3D} view, save and upload this file.

@messig I tried reproducing this with a new link/host, and I’m not seeing this behavior:

  1. Create link with some walls.
  2. Create host with some furniture.
  3. Setup link and section box.
  4. Setup 3D view to be published (Publish Settings).
  5. Uploaded host, and when prompted added link.

I’m attaching the sample models that I created, if you upload these to the viewer, are you seeing that the link is being cut by the section box?

Ok thank you both, your responses led to a method that works for me. @ToanDN you are right about the section box, (which I was using), and @Lance.Coffey your comment led me to realize my publish settings were not set up correctly. My upload now comes in with the arch model nicely cropped by the default 3D view section box.

I appreciate both of your quick responses!
