Scan to BIM for dummies?

I would like to be able to represent existing/as-built geometry without spending time modelling it all up in Revit (and some of the plant we work around would be beyond my capabilities anyway). What is the cost common practice for scanning objects and importing them into 3D (families?) in Revit. We currently use point clouds but they're so cumbersome to work around. I have had some success using my iphone's lidar to scan some items and create OBJ files but don't know where to go from here, or if this is even the correct way to go about it.

Perhaps in the near future an AI Revit will be able to create a BIM Model from a scan.  We're not there yet. Thankfully.  😉

Are you saying theres no real way to scan objects and import them in? Recap, mesh etc, none of that works?

I didn't say that. Your question was specifically about Scan to BIM.  That is, translating a Scan into a Building Information Model.  Did I misread?

You can convert a cloud model to mesh and import the mesh in to create 3D model.  How useful it is I can't answer.  And it is still just a dumb 3D model, no intelligence.

@barthbradley No you didn't misread, perhaps my title was too specific. We simply require 3D representation of existing equipment/plant that it is not time efficient for us to model.

@ToanDN I have done quite a bit of googling and not been able to find many good processes for how to do this, do you have any resources?
