Running Revit in Parallels?

Hi, All. I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place but I'm curious... Would there be any interest in creating a new forum for people using Revit on a Mac? 

For the most part, Revit has been running very well in Parallels 14. But sometimes when I have problems I can't be sure if it's caused by Revit or by the virtual machine. Maybe I'm not the only one?

It might be prudent to at least determine if it is Revit or not while you are here. Start a new thread with a title that indicates the issue.

What would the Mac Revit forum be for?  Only Mac users?  Only Mac related questions?

Hi, ToanDN. Yes, for Mac users. I posed the question only to gauge interest.

When I started using Revit on Mac a couple years ago I had lots of setup problems but now it's pretty stable in Parallels 14 with 8GB of memory. I'd be happy to share my experience, such as it is, with other Mac users who might have the same challenges. 

I don't even know if there are more than a handful of Mac/Revit users out there anyway... If there's not much interest, then no probs.

I'm a Mac user who has had problems running Revit under Parallels. Considering upgrading to Parallels 14 but need to know if Revit does run before I buy. I would welcome assistance with set-up if I do. So yes this would be a useful forum for me.

Hi, that sounds like an excellent idea !

For now im upgrading my revit PC every 3 year and its costly as I really dont have any interest of maintaining a seperate Wind system. Havent migrated my revit setup to mac yet but really hope to get there with my new macbook pro 16. Good to here that there are people that are running this setup and think that its also doable for people that have no interest in fiddeling with things that does not work. If its work - perfect. Forum - great idea 🙂

In a university computer lab, I've had very good success running Revit 2016-2020 on 5-year-old iMacs using Boot Camp and Windows 10. Since with Boot Camp you boot either to Windows or to the Mac OS, not both, you will not be able to toggle back and forth between operating systems, but you will have access to all the memory and CPU cycles while running Revit. And Boot Camp comes free with your Mac.

we run revit on small intel nuc computers. connection to mac is with microsoft remote desktop app on imac. works good and switching between mac and revit is very fast.

Hi Bill,

I have a question about the parallels 16 best set up to stop Revit LT 2021 lugging during zooming in and out. Let's say the zoom is not smooth and it's jumping. The pan and orbit works fine. I have have Mac Pro 16, with 16Gb rams.

Do you have any tips how to set up parallels configuration? I attached screen shots of parallels set up. I will be really happy about any tips you have.

I am running Revit LT 2021 via Parallels on a MacBook pro.

I'm not sure if a new forum was created or not, but I would be interested in joining.

Today my question is where can I find the family files (*.rfa) ?

When I select Load Families, I'm merely taken to the last folder I had opened, not the actual Family Files folder.

Sound familiar?

I can't unfortunately as my version of Parallels only allows a maximum of 8GB.

I am about to up my memory from (4) 8gig ddrs to (4) 16gig my technician is wondering if I want to go boot camp or keep using parallel’s (which works well running revit LT 2021 - main thing I wonder also if the parallels weirdness re file naming might get better under boot camp - ? 
Mind u I don’t like using my Sony HDTV 42” as a second monitor for showing various photos while I work and windows is so inept I wonder if that might get mucked up. 

parallells only gives me 28 gigs because it needs 4 gigs for OS X. 

But if I go to 68 gigs ($1200) I would not have that issue I’d have a full 64or 60 gigs - and disregard the bay sayer ur idea of a Mac forum is a splendid one! 🙏🏾💜

Sorry I haven't been monitoring this thread for a long time. Some have posted questions to me relating to running Revit in Parallels. I'm not a good technical resource but I don't mind sharing my own experience if it's helpful. I've been running Revit LT, latest versions, in Parallels, latest versions, and have had really good performance.

For what it's worth, I also run Vectorworks in Big Sur on the same MacBook Pro 16 and I'd say Revit LT in Parallels opens and performs a LOT faster than Vectorworks. 

I have 32 GB memory and Parallels assigns half to Windows and half to Mac. So, in general terms, I'm doing residential projects with 16 GB memory. I do get the occasional spinning wheel in Revit but it's not a big issue.

I have parallels assigned 4 gig ram and 28 to windows running revit LT 2021 it works well!

Occasional problem with “workshare” because parallels is kinda its own universe- but copying file (Autodesk technician suggested) works to re-link once one moves copy to safe folder in documents. . .

About to buy (4) 16 gig ram sticks to beef it to Max! 🙏🏾💪🏽

Really like the idea of a Mac forum! We are a small but handsome lot🤣😎

I finally managed to get OS X updated to Big Sur only to find that magic preferences driver no longer supported! 😳

I cannot get the central button to activate the pan tool. . . I’ve tried windows preferences as well as researched alternatives. 
Any of you fellow brave Mac reviteers figured this out ( bloody annoying)? 😱
