Revit will NOT install

I’ve been unable to Revit for over two weeks. I have been through the full uninstall process of all Autodesk products at least five times. There are no Windows OS updates needed.
With the Web install, it wants to update Revit first without installing the software. I tried a custom install and it tells me the product is already installed when it is not installed. I did get the five files from Customer Service to try installing it directly on my computer. Again getting an error saying that the program is already installed and stops the process when the software clearly is not on my computer.

Customer service ignores my emails, and have to get back onto the chat and re-explain the whole situation over and over again even when giving them my case#. They will only chat and email for any type of communication. They told me I needed video evidence to take the case any further. Free video recording software will only take 5-30 minutes, otherwise you need to pay for it. They told me to use my phone to record but is pretty difficult to hold your phone up and go through the operations for an hour. Don’t think I would be able to take an hour's worth of footage anyways.

I am an educator part-time so I don’t have the funds to spend on anything else right now. Autodesk refuses to remote into my computer to diagnose the issue and fix it when everything is Autodesk-related. It wouldn’t take them long for them to remote and fix the issue than the way the situation is being handled now. I want to install Revit 2023 and 2024 because that is what all my files are in and to avoid upgrading every file which takes a long time. I started trying to install 2024 first.
After I know I can get Revit installed, then I can install the rest of the Autodesk software need to teach.
I am at my breaking point and don’t know who else to ask to remedy this issue.
I would prefer not to have to reinstall Windows and everything again, I do have another stipulation with getting Windows 10 on my computer again since it was a free upgrade from Windows 7 a while back.
I’ve hear some people having success with uninstall tools. Which ones are the best? There are a lot of bad ones out there. I have heard of Revo, but first time I have been in this situation in 25 years of working with a lot of software.
If anyone has any input on what to do for next steps I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Follow these guides to uninstall all Revit:

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-Complete-a-...

I wouldn't use any of the "magic" tools that de-install or optimize your PC. They will ruin your PC.

When you install, make sure the large installation files are on a local drive. I hope your PC is powerful enough. just saying since you say converting files takes a long time.

Revit Version: R2026.4
Hardware: i9 14900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada 16GB
Add-ins: ElumTools; Ripple-HVAC; ElectroBIM; Qbitec

Thanks for the feedback HVAC-Novice.  Good to know about the uninstall tools, it was suggested for running into the issue that I am.  I tried what you sent and it is pretty similar to what I was sent before (https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Clean-uninstall.ht...).  Your solution did not work.  I even turned off my anti-virus and VPN this time.  I received the same error that the software was already installed, even though everything Autodesk had been removed.
If you are familiar with Revit, upgrading files can be time-consuming.  I built the computer back in 2017 - 8 core 3.8ghz Xeon processor, 2TB SSD, 128gb ripjaw, and upgraded GPU to an Nvidia 3080TI.  5k for a new computer isn't in the cards right now.  The install files are in my downloads folder, but that shouldn't make a difference because that is where I've always run install files.
Let me know if you have any other ideas.  Thanks again.

The Microsoft trouble shooter does a decent job for stubborn installations. Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed - Microsoft Support

You might say this is crazy but that’s how it is…autodesk products can be a real pain when it comes to install and uninstall, even when one thinks that he knows it all…a clean uninstall can sometimes get you to hate everything about software, hardware and IT all together. At this point you have two alternatives:

  • Either keep experimenting, visit St. John’s, St. Peter’s or even the Vatikan and make some vows and prey it works
  • or if you have already been through the customer support and AI Chatbot ordeals and you are already past the breakdown point, go ahead and format your PC.

PS: the hardware build you described is pretty much more than enough to run Revit any day. Just make sure to update everything in the process, from motherboard BIOS/UEFI firmware, gpu drivers, .Net drivers windows…all. IMPORTANT: You might need to reactivate windows so make sure to prepare that flash drive before you format.

And when u install Revit, open it once, close it then install the last issued hotfix. Do not install them all one buy one (just the last)

Thanks for the response Simon.  I tried that right after my post and sadly it didn't find anything.

Cheers!

Thanks for your response RDAOU.  Haha, that doesn't sound crazy at all.  Thanks for making me smile, one of the best replies I've received.  Sometimes weird things happen, just annoyed to have all that work ahead installing everything on my computer and updates, just because the software wasn't written properly.  But there is nothing I can do about it and have to laugh it off.  I am going to contact Microsoft Technical Support later today, sometimes they are pretty good at problem-solving.  They can get me all set up for the next steps and teach me how to install Windows with the Digital License.  I have a fresh flash drive ready for before I format.

Thanks for the tip after installing Revit to open the software, close it, and then install the last hotfix only.  I will do that with the other Autodesk software as well.

Cheers!

I know you wrote that there are no OS updates required...but that's what I thought last year when no Autodesk software would start up for me. After working with an Autodesk support person for two hours we discovered that an older security patch was not getting installed on the OS. The update screen didn't complain about it but when we looked at specific updates we noticed one indicated that it didn't install. It also wouldn't install or update until I followed a KB article on MS to get it to install.

Long story to say...double check the OS situation closely.

Thanks for the heads up Steve.  It would be nice to get this resolved without having to reinstall everything.  Did you end up calling headquarters415-507-5000?
or I found this number too 800-873-3375?  The many customer service people I've been chatting with will only chat and email and not look into anything since it is an educational license.  I'll try calling in a couple of hours and see if they can help.

Cheers!

I started with the chat AI bot in the Autodesk Account Admin page...it appears in the bottom right corner. Eventually it was escalated to a person who spent considerable time with me working thru it.

Thanks, I've been doing that for over 3 weeks.  Start with an AI chatbot, then chat and email with customer service.  They told me they don't offer any other support for an educational license, even though when I was having other issues last year I did eventually get help after 3 attempts.  The phone numbers do not work to get a human.  The phone number tells you to set up an appointment at autodesk/gethelp for tech support.  That page is not for tech support, the US person doesn't have an appointment for weeks, if you click to talk to anyone it is from 2 am to 3 am.  Only to maybe talk to a person that might not be able to help.
I wish I could get the help that you did.  That would be the right thing to do and to have good customer support.

Educational License seat and Standard subscriptions do not have the option Steve mentioned. Support in your case is limited to AI Chat bot, Opening an online ticket and chat with an agent. To have a 1 on 1 live support from a specialist you need to have a premium or enterprise. Its like VIP and VVIP kinda service

Where you get redirected, the support agents you are always ending up with and the level of support you get are not a random process and it starts from the second you start chating with the AI Chat bot. You can check the details on the link below.
