Revit site file separate to building file?

Hi I am trying to find out the best way to set up the model for a new project.

Previously we have only done the buildings in Revit and the site in CAD so I am new to this.

Is the site usually in the same model as the building or is it separate and the building(s) linked to the site file?

This project has multiple buildings across a large site at different orientations if that helps.

Has anyone any suggestions / recommendations?

since you have multiple revit building models as separate files...create a separate file just for the site and use the coordinate system of the site revit file as your datum reference...this is what's typically done.  Look into linking Revit files By Shared Coordinates for more understanding...

Hello I usually link the site and building individually and use workset to control views of link file. Thanks

you can still use linking and visibility control of linked revit files independent of the site model as well as the site model itself.  Look at the Manage Links window (lower left corner) as well as Visibility Graphics dialog box.

Thanks, the buildings are not yet modelled I am literally starting from the beginning and wondering the best way to set up the project.

Is it best to do which of the following;

1. Everything in one file. Site and building (if this is possible)

2. One site file linked to one building file

3. One site plan linked to multiple building files

if you are working on a revit project where there are several revit building models on a site, then the typical approach is to create a separate file for each building model and the site model.  Then, link all bldg models into the site and proceed with coordinate sharing.

if you are working with just 1 bldg model and it obviously has a site, you can create the site data/model as part of the building model.

Great so in this case we have a number of different buildings throughout the same site so it sounds like separate building models.

Will this then mean we have to have separate scheduling and tagging?

you can tag and schedule data that is within a linked revit file.  However, the list of categories that can be tagged and scheduled is not long.
