I like having my 2D details in Revit so I can accurately reference them throughout the set, but it gets a little cumbersome when there's a bunch of them. The other way of course is to do a sheet or two of 2D details in Autocad, but then I have to create a dummy sheet in the Revit model, and I lose the Revit cross referencing functionality. I'm just curious how the Revit pros do it?

There isn't any time saving doing what you are trying to do. Create drafting views in Revit and if you want to re-use AutoCAD content, import them in detail component families (preferred) or link them in the drafting views.
I create a Revit project with nothing but details in it. (I actually have several, so I can sort them) When i need to load one in my actual project, i use the "insert view" command in the insert tab, to load the details I actually need.
The details I use all the time are part of my template, and already inserted into a sheet.
Here's another 'how would you do it': I have a number of walls that have a 5' tile wainscot, and the tile occurs on a bunch of different wall types. Unlocking the tile layer on all those wall types and dragging the tile layer down on all of them is tedious. I could just create a 'tile only' layer and add the tile that way, but that seems like cheating. Opinions? Thank you.
