REVIT LINK FROM DIFFERENT REVIT VERSION

REVIT LINK FROM DIFFERENT REVIT VERSION

Hi guys I have a question

What happens if I link a revit 2016 model in to a revit 2018 model? Does this affect the 2016 model version? I don't want to change or do anything to the 2016 version, just want to alter its visibility via the link and to use it for reference. The 2016 model is not owned by my team and I can't modify it or change its version and the problem is that I don't have a 2016 revit version so I'm thinking I'll just link it into my 2018 model. Do you know anything about this?

Thanks!

It'll temporarily upgrade the Link, but it won't do anything permanent.  In other words, the upgrade changes to a linked model are temporary; they are not saved when you save the host model.  Revit lets you know this by throwing a Warning.

It will upgrade everytime you open your project.  So depending on how large it is, it will take some time to open.

I'd suggest upgrading it to 2018 whenever you get an updated model to eliminate the upgrade process.

But...what about  your model to them?  They can't use it.

Is this a cloud project?

Is the other team inhouse?

Can you make a copy of the other team's file that you can upgrade?

The other team will not be able to use your file for coordination if you use a newer version.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hey thanks so much, both of you for your quick response.

Weel the thing is that this project works with a collaborative environment so there are a lot of users of the 2016 model version and the all have revit 2016. I'm just a contractor that needs to monitor some advances via the model, I don't enter any information to the models I just watch.

Hello All,
This is my very first time joining any forum like this and I am so excited to learn from you guys and maybe share things that I have learnt from others as well. But this time I'd like to ask similar to jarss question. I figured that linking a lower version to a higher version wouldn't be a problem at all and this basically the same to all other software's in general. My question is actually the other way around. Is there any technique or work around in Revit where we could reference the higher version (2016) to a lower version (2015) of Revit rather than exporting the 2016 version to AutoCAD file format then linking it to 2015 Revit version. I know that there is no way to downgrade the database or saveas the higher version of Revit into the lower one but I was just wondering if there is somehow we could do it, like for example an add-on feature from the lower version in able to link or reference the higher version. I would appreciate any input that you might have. Thank you very much.

Linked models should be of the same version. If a model from a previous version is linked, Revit needs to upgrade it every time the referencing model is opened.
