Revit and Windows 10

Will revit 2016 be one day compatible with windows 10 ? Or do we have to wait for revit 2017 ?

Revit 2016 is "compatible" with Windows 10.  Autodesk will not support Revit 2016 installed with Windows 10 because it was released after Revit 2016.  This is the same issue with newer video cards that have not been tested, hence unsupported.  Many users have installed BDS2014 and BDS2015 with no complications and we still use newer video cards too.  

The primary complication that arrises with Revit 201X and Windows 10 is people purchasing 4k monitor laptops and trying to enlarge the screen to see the buttons better in Revit 201X and the UI goes wonky.  If you want to keep the 4K resolution, then deal with the small buttons and leave the display zoom under 150%.  Else bite the bullet and lower the resolution to a 2K level.  The other issue is just not enough hard drive space to install.  

Personally, I decided to go ahead and upgrade my computer when I got a new processor and mobo and have since installed Buillding Design Suite Ultimate 2016, Revit LT 2016 Suite and Entertainment Creation Suite 2016 without any issues.  I transitioned from Windows 7 to Windows 10 because I hated Windows 8.1 on other systems.  Since I still run Windows 7 on my work laptop, I still see the differences and wish I could upgrade my work laptop.

There really needs to be a sticky about the Revit 2016 and Windows 10 issue....as it seems everyday there is a new "Is it compatible?" "Will it work?" thread that pops up and we answer it the same way as all the rest.

@Anonymous Thanks for the reply. I'm asking since we're going to get an Alienware laptop to do some Virtual Reality on it, and it comes in W10. We will have to have revit installed in order to use (and sometimes export) our models correctly.

It's a simple 15R2 with a standard 1080p screen and a very decent GPU (GTX 980M iirc).

Are you planning on using an Oculus Rift by any chance?  If you are let me know, there are bigger issues with this than Revit's compatibility with Win10.

@Keith_Wilkinson I do not recall I used any words out of the line of respect or a term/statement that extend beyond the outset and limit of the technical issue pertaining to the topic of this post. In the event that you consider a reply, based on an official statement by Autodesk, rude, then do accept my sincere appologies for not being able to appologize on Autodesks behalf for not issuing statements one can use to entertain people's personal likings and expectations. 

What you may deem rude others deem straight forward. There is a statement issued by Autodesk which lists Compatible Products and Revit is not on that list. Besides that I can not give you as an answer. One should be held accountable for their answers based on accuracy not wishes. And those answers are sometimes used by others who plan to make big investments (hence accuracy is a must). If insisting on that is Rude it is your own issue not mine. What you and other user want to accept is up to you and other users.

Yes I will be setting up a DK2 on the Alienware with Windows 10 whilst waiting for the upcoming new Oculus Rift that's coming out this summer, the CV1. We pre-ordered it and it should be ariving in june ! (The headquarters of my company are in France)

Thanks for letting me know about this, I'll go and have a look on internet to see what they say about this and have a chat with my IT manager.

We'll be using Enscape with the Oculus Rift, and also other software such as Unity.

I'll make sure to send you a message when we setup everything to see how it goes.

I recall people having issues with the 980 cards, but that was when we were all "going all in and hold my beer" days.  I haven't seen anyone complain about it in other forums as of late, so just be sure the video driver is updated.

Since I am a gamer, my video drivers are always updated. 

As for the Oculus Rift question by @Keith_Wilkinson, yeah, that may be an issue.  Our OC setup is still Windows 7, and it's a desktop not a laptop.  

Be sure you are running OC .7, if you have a lower release it is not supported under Windows 10.

Okay,

I have a DK2 kit which I've been working with on and off for the last 18 months or so.  Recently I upgraded the Runtime software only to find that it no longer worked (I'm been running it on my Dell Precision M4500 with Quadro K3000 Graphics card).  The reason for this is down to the graphics card not supporting native Direct X 11 (ironically given this thread it's DX11 compatible not native).  I'm not aware of any laptop graphics card that currently support this.  The recommended graphics card is the  NVIDIA GTX 970 which if you are up on your cards is a pretty serious piece of kit... 

So bottom line, check the spec of your laptop carefully as I now have a Rift that I can't currently use despite having a £1500 mobile workstation!...  😞

@Keith_WilkinsonWhat you're saying is very interesting, since at work I have a M4800 with a K2100M GPU, which is a pretty crap graphics card.

Since part of my job is working on Real-time navigation in our revit models (I love my job btw :D) I told them we needed a "gamer" computer of that would be impossible so the company got me an Alienware.

I tried the DK2 on my current M4800, and the experience is horrible, the graphics card is really bad for real-time 3D rendering (I was at 2 or 3 fps haha, you need at least 70 or 80hz minimum for a decent VR experience with no headaches). So it doesn't suprise me that the K3000 is also very bad at this. My colleague who is our Revit Expert and works on a Rig has the K4000; and I tried I was at 15-20fps maximum. 

The GTX 980M should do the trick. At home I personally set up a GTX 970, and tried the DK2, it works like a charm and it's really amazing !

@Anonymous I'm also a gamer (PCMR), the DK2 should be ok on the Alienware, with the updated drivers of course.

For the tests I was doing with it I found it fine but i would love to see it running on a proper rig.  the issue now isn't with FPS or anything else though it just fundamentally doesn't work as it's DX11 compatible, not DX11 native.  So long as you're sure your Alienware card is native then you should be good.

One other thing to watch, Oculus are very quick to tell you that 'laptops' aren't supported if something doesn't work so watch that too...

Have you tried Revizto?  Our clients have been loving it, and since we have putting in more detail into our families and models.  If you were at RTC NA last year you saw a video of it in action on one of our projects.

WELL i HAVE NOT HAD SO MUCH FUN WATCHING A DEBATE SINCE THE ALI FORMAN FIGHT.  I AM NOT TECHNO I JUST WANT TO GET MY DRAWINGS DONE ON TIME.  i HAVE A NIGHTMARE RUNNING REVIT LT AND AUTOCAD LT ON MY SUPER WIZ BANG LAPTOP RUNNING WINDOWS 10 PRO.  SAME CONFIGURATION WORKS FINE ON MY DESKTOP.

AUTODESK TELLS ME TO UPGRADE TO THE JUST OUT 2018 VERSIONS AND ALL WILL BE FINE.  UPGRADES ALWAYS SCARE THE POOP OUT OF THIS VERY OLD MAN.  YOUR THOUGHTFUL RECOMENDATIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Revit 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 have been working fine in Windows 10 in my office for the last year and half.

Let's face it, Autodesk will never come back to state the comparability for any versions came out before Windows 10 release (2016 and any older ones).  They have no benefits of doing that, plus they need to push customers to upgrade to the new versions and much as they can.
