Revit 2026 install corrupts Windows 11 Explorer — crash caused by msvcp140.dll

We have now seen this issue on three different computers in the last two months.

After downloading and installing Revit 2026 on Windows 11, the system becomes unstable:

• Windows File Explorer crashes immediately and cannot be used.

• Revit itself does not open.

Looking at the Event Viewer, the faulting module is  always the msvcp140.dll.

The only workaround we’ve found is to manually repair the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributables (both x64 and x86). After repairing, Windows Explorer starts working again and Revit launches normally.

This looks like a reproducible installer issue that corrupts or conflicts with the VC++ runtime.
👉 Could Autodesk please provide an immediate correction to the Revit 2026 installer to prevent this critical Windows-level crash?

Sorry to hear that. You should open a ticket with Autodesk support. They are unlikely to read these forums frequently. 

I saw SP3 was released on 9/15. Does that help in any way? 

I've used R2026 for a while and haven't had problems on W11. Did you check event viewer when that happens? Did your IT by any chance do some changes to your installations? Are all 3 PCs the same hardware? did previous Revit versions run flawlessly?

Its an installation downloaded from the Autodesk website, no changes. What is special is that 3 different users, and 3 different machines were affected. 

Apparently this is a classic:

So did you install R2026.3 and the problem still persists? I'm still on R2026.2 (and don't have problems). 

Sounds like other users had a problem after a W11 update? (but from that thread, it isn't clear what version of 2026 they used....)

We are having the same issue with both Revit and AutoCAD 2026, and File Explorer if Explorer is opening to "Home"/Recent files list.  (Opening it via "This PC" avoids the File Explorer issue.)  As Luis mentioned, repairing VC++ 2015-2022 x64 resolves the Revit/CAD issue--no restart required.  Restart is required to resolve the File Explorer issue.  Unfortunately, the problem returns for a lot of people with each monthly installation of updates from Microsoft, at which point we have to do the VC++ repair again.  Then all seems to be well until the next Microsoft Update install.  I installed SP3 for Revit 2026, but that didn't resolve the problem.  Not sure if it will prevent the prob from recurring in the future.  If not, I'd love for Autodesk to focus on the source of this issue and maybe work with Microsoft to get it resolved.

Are you using a Fiery printer (Xerox) ?
I found that Fiery driver is copying back an old msvcp140.dll in system32 replacing the more recent one after an update.

It's not a Xerox, but we do have a printer that uses a Fiery controller.  We just completed another round of updates with the concomitant msvcp issues, but I'll make a note to check for this in December.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I've had this problem with Revit 2026 since it was released.  I performed clean uninstalls and the all the recommended fixes, registry cleanup, video driver etc. including downloading latest versions (now 2026.4) from the manage.autodesk.com for both custom deployment and standalone Installs to no avail.  But the suggestion in this post solved the issue.  I was ready to reimage my Win11 computer.  I kept seeing Revit 2026 in the Task Manager but then it would disappear. no error message at all. I only found this solution after checking the Event Viewer which reported the MSVCP140.dll failure and that led me to this post. Thanks!

Yes, solution is to remove old Fiery printer driver from computer.
The old driver detects the change of dll file after a windows update and replace it by its older one creating the problem.

I don't think our Fiery driver is reverting the MSVCP version--I checked after the last round of updates and the version for MSVCP remained the most recent.

SP3 for Revit 2026 does not prevent recurrence of this issue.

what worked for me... go to add remove programs and search for C++.  look for Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022, then click the 3 dots ... and choose Modify.  Repair both (x64 and x86) and then restart.

Yes, that works for a repair, but if you have the old Fiery driver installed, you will have to do that at each new update of C++ Redistributable.

We have found restarting after the repairs is *not* necessary to get AutoCAD and Revit 2026 working again.  Restarting is required, however, to get File Explorer working again unless you configure File Explorer to open to "This PC."  You can do that with a change to this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced --create or modify the LaunchTo DWORD value. Set this value to 1 for "This PC."  (Value 0 reverts to the default Windows 11 Quick Access view.)

I found "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022" .  It must be there for a reason.  I am not comfortable uninstalling it?

I don't recommend uninstalling it; I think it's necessary for Revit, AutoCAD, and other apps as well.

How do you repair?  I only see an option to uninstall, which I dont want to do.

If you don't have the option to Modify and then Repair.
Download the installer, uninstall and then reinstall.

Will do the same and does not take much time.
