Revit 2024 direct link to Twinmotion problem.

HI,

I have just upgraded from Revit LT to the full version and have now installed Revit 2024 as well as the latest version of Twinmotion for revit, but when I try to use the open in twinmotion option it says twinmotion is not installed. I have tried re-installing Twinmotion and tried the workaround on the known issues with twinmotion page, but with no success.

I have also tried exporting a datasmith file to import to twinmotion, but each time the file only contains folder and lights, but no actual meshes, I have tried various different model files and import settings, but to no avail.

I tried downloading a different direct link plugin from the twinmotion site, but they don't have one for revit 2024 yet. As I one of the reasons I upgraded to the full version of revit was to have an easier visualisation workflow, this is a bit of a problem, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Hello,

Each version of Revit targets one or two specific versions of Twinmotion for the Open in Twinmotion command.

Specifically:

  • Revit 2023.1: Twinmotion 2022.2.3 + Datasmith Exporter 5.0.3
  • Revit 2024.2: Twinmotion 2023.1 or Twinmotion 2023.2
  • Revit 2025: Twinmotion 2023.2 or Twinmotion 2024.1

For Revit 2025, if both Twinmotion 2023.2.3 and Twinmotion 2024.1 are installed on the same workstation, I believe Open in Twinmotion should default to launching Twinmotion 2024.1.

Thank you for your answer.
I am using Revit 2024.2 and Twinmotion 2023.2.4.
Unlike twinmotion, updating Revit to a newer version requires careful consideration. So determining the target version for twinmotion to match the Revit version is a bit strange.
Also, I tried what you suggested several times before asking the question.
I also deleted the old version, and when I press "Open in Twinmotion" it shows an error: Supported version of Twinmotion is not installed....
If there was a manual method of specifying the Twinmotion version it would be easier for me.
thanks

Having the same issue; open in twinmotion opens Twinmotion, but nothing actually appears, and the direct connection dialogue in Twinmotion or in Revit don't detect one another.

Hallo,

I am having the same problem as all the above members. I am using Revit 2025.1 and Twinmotion 2024.1. I have tried everything like it was mentioned in all the previous comments. Do you perhaps have a solution to the problem?

Best Regards

Ansje

I think you better get used to the new process: use "Export to datasmith" botton instead of Autosync. It might take a few extra steps at first but it will be less headache

What is the preferred export type for those on Revit LT (no Twinmotion addon), obj?

I don’t have experience using Revit LT without add-ons. In my workflow, I export a Datasmith file and then import it into the desired TM version. When I need to update, I use the reimport option in TM.
As for OBJ files, I’m not sure if I need to adjust the UV mapping of the materials, like I did when using UE 4.32 and 3ds Max.

For example, one I want to rule out, is if Twinmotion was installed by another user or part of an image, you will need to manually launch Twinmotion once. This will properly set the registry value that Revit checks for when doing the Open in Twinmotion command:

Hi Ryan.  Can you tell us the registry value that Revit checks for?  Our security makes every login a first login so students always need to run Twinmotion first.  I'd like to pre-set the registry in the default user.  Thanks

Hello,

It will vary based on the version of Revit and supported version of Revit, but the check should be in the following registry location:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\

For example, if Twinmotion for Revit 2023.2 was installed, there should be an entry in this registry location as follows (with the value automatically pointing to the Twinmotion.exe install location):

Twinmotion2023.2-Revit.exe

From your guidance, I can specify the desired version of Twinmotion by changing the default path of Twinmotion that Revit is working with to a different path. I hope someone will find it useful.

The TM connector has been a problem from the start.  Still a problem in 2025.

They don't seem to take it very seriously.  Should it be this hard?

Losing connection and imports only 3 lights where there should be a whole model....

Frustration.

Hi All who come across this thread.

I had the issue where the twin motion widget was working, but the error message saying that twin motion was not installed, despite the fact that the "most current" twin motion WAS installed Twinmotion 2025.1.

The solution was to un-install the most current twin motion and install Twinmotion 2024.1

Thank you,

Hi,

I installed Twinmotion 2024.1 for Revit 2025, but the Twinmotion plugin is grayed out in Revit and I cannot click on it. It seems like it is not installed correctly. Can you please help me fix this issue?
