Revit 2018 Shared Parameters show in titleblock not in project

I am revisiting a workflow that I haven't done for a while, and am lost as to why the shared parameters I created and used in the titleblock are not populating once the titleblock is inserted in a project and parameters are added to Project Information. Here's the workflow:

Defining a parameter

  1. Open your titleblock family.
  2. Go to Manage>Shared Parameters. (If you already have shared parameters, go to Step 4).
  3. In the Edit Shared Parameters dialog box, click Create and locate a default file location. Enter a file name and save
  4. In the Edit Shared Parameters dialog box>Groups, click New.
  5. In the New Parameter Group dialog box, enter a group name.
  6. In the Edit Shared Parameters dialog box> Parameters, click New.
  7. In the Parameter Properties dialog box, enter a parameter name.
  8. Select Common from the Discipline drop-down list and Text from the Type drop-down list.
  9. Click OK to close each dialog box.

Attaching the parameter to the sheet

  1. In the titleblock family, go to Create>Text>Label to create a new Label (or select an existing label and choose Edit Label).
  2. In the Select Parameter dialog box, click New Parameter
  3. In the Parameter Properties dialog box, click Select.
  4. In the Shared Parameters dialog box, select the parameter group (ie Sheets) and then select the parameter.
  5. Click OK to close each dialog box.
  6. Use the arrows to add the parameter to the label.
  7. Click save and load into the project.

Loading the new parameters into the project

  1. Go to Manage>Project Parameters
  2. In the Project Parameters dialog box, click Add.
  3. In the Parameters Properties dialog box, choose Shared Parameter as Type, then click Select.
  4. Select the Parameter Group and the Parameter(s) that you want to add. Click OK.
  5. In the Parameter Properties dialog box, under Parameter Data>Group Parameter Under, make sure that Other is selected and that Instance is selected.
  6. Under Categories, select Project Information.
  7. Click OK to close each dialog box.
  1. Open the Project Information dialog box to verify the parameter is added. Open a sheet to verify the information populates the sheet.

You have the [Project Random Parameter] assigned to both Project Information and Sheets categories.  Remove it from Sheets category.

In my opinion, the steps you have written are correct. But there's one step that you don't mention:

... In the Project Information dialog box, enter some value in the new shared parameter, click OK.

Then the shared parameter in the titleblock should display the information that you typed in Project Information.

Or... the other way around:

You enter a value in the shared parameter on the sheet, and the same value should appear in the Project Information dialog box.

Hmm, now I am surprised, because in the steps written in the original post, the user never said that the parameter was applied to both Sheets and Project Information, just to Project Information.  Yes, that double assignment won't work. I did not open the files, I just based my response on the steps.

Removing it from the Sheet category worked for the Project Random Parameter and Project Test, but the Project Manager parameter was only assigned to Project Information and has not been displaying. The first two parameters were not showing at first either, so I had added them to the sheet category. Any idea on how to get the Project Manager parameter to show? I've also attached my shared parameter file.

All 3 parameters have information under the appropriate parameters in the Project Information dialog box. Technically I should be able to add them directly from the titleblock by double-clicking the question mark to activate the parameter, but that has not been functioning either.

I would suggest that the Project Manager parameters in the family and in the project are not from the same Shared Parameters source.  I open the Project Parameters in Project, select the Project Manager parameter, and export it.  Then I edit the Title block family, edit the label, add the Project Manager parameter from the Exported source, and it shows up.

As mentioned, don't add parameters to both Project Information and Sheets categories because they serve different functions as their names suggested.

Hi All,

I have a similar issue in my case, the SP is assigned to Rooms & Sheets, I have tried it assigning the SP to Rooms & Project info, also tried assigning it to Rooms only but still does work. The SP is coming from one source file and the job is in R2017. The SP needs to assigned to Rooms as the info is coming from Codebook which needs to go on the Titleblock. I do have an alternative workable solution to get the info on the sheets through room schedules, but really curious about this one.

The data entered to different categories, in your case, Rooms and Project Info, have no connection to one another whatsoever, even though they are the same shared parameters. What are you curious about?

Maybe not Rooms & Project information, is there any way to get Room info on a Titleblock?

Not without something like Dynamo. Use your alternate method, place schedules on sheet.

Mr. Weber,  Thank you.  Your post helped me.  I had -just prior- used the Autodesk Knowledge Network and found something from 2014 to address this.  It failed me possibly do to the 2018 release remapping the flow of this type through their software modules, henceforth, the "Project Info" category instead.

I'm a fairly new user.  Thank you again.
