Revit 2017 can't start after Windows update

Anonymous

Hello!

I have been experiencing this problem, when my windows 10 automatically updated (12.5.2017) I just can't start Revit. After double click on the icon it starts loading, but nothing happens. I tried every way to start the program. When I try to open rvt project, an error message pops up- "there was a problem sending command to the program." All this also happend after update about two weeks back (5.5.), I "resolved" it by rolling back the update. Now it is not possible, windows says that the latest update was 10 days before (not true). Also, weird is that revit is running as process in task manager, but there is no icon, I can't access the program.
Can anyone help? Or have similar issue?

Hi @Anonymous

Sorry to hear that you are facing issues loading the application.

Since you mentioned that you have updated windows 10, I recommend that you also check for Visual C++ with Microsoft.

Did you trying logging in an another user?

Follow the steps and check if that helps:

1. Go to the location C:\Program File\autodesk\revit 2017\revit.exe

2. Right click on revit.exe and click on Properties and then click on Compatibility tab. Check if you have any check mark in any of the compatibility mode options. Make sure you also click on the option "change settings for all users"tab at the bottom of the same screen and look for similar check boxes in the window.

3. Uncheck the option Run as Administrator option is you have it checked.

4. If you see any check boxes in the compatibility mode options, uncheck all the boxes and click on Apply and OK.

Also I suggest you  try re-associating the "open with" program and see if you get the same message.

Let me know if this works.

I am having the same issue. I checked all of the properties in the revit.exe file and none of the boxes were checked in the compatibility tab. I have also tried to repair the program in uninstall mode as mentioned in another post.

The program tries to open, but then nothing happens from there. I'm left with a splash screen and then eventually if I click anywhere, it says "Program Not Responding." There are no error messages or anything else, I just have to eventually close it.

I am running Revit 2017 Service Release 2, just downloaded it, on Windows 10.

Thanks for any recommendations you have.

 Hi @Anonymous

  • Infrequent product crashes can be difficult to pin down, as the troubleshooting process would involve finding patterns in the behavior making a change and then seeing if the issue is cleared. If the issue is infrequent, then this necessarily means that each iteration will take longer to check if the issue has been cleared.

Frequent crashes generally cause more disruption, but also provide more opportunities for troubleshooting.
  • Note: When troubleshooting crashes, especially for multiple users, it is important to check if the crashes are related to a single cause (crashes can occur for a variety of reasons, and if you try to troubleshoot without understanding the number of different crash conditions, you will be less likely to identify any of the root causes.)
  • To look for patterns in crashes start by reviewing journal files recorded when a crash occurs. Open several of the journals in a text editor, go to the end of the file, and check if the lines recorded around the time of the crash are similar, or different. If seeing different lines recorded in the journals, you may need to gather a larger sample size to identify common patterns, to see how many different crash conditions are occurring).
  • Once you generate a journal file, we can see if you have the latest update/ service pack installed for your Revit build.

Basic items to check:

  • Is Revit updated (in general it is better to be on the latest update of the product, and in many cases as issues are identified and resolved, applying the latest update could clear up unexpected behavior, including crashes)?
  • If Add-ins are installed into Revit, does the crash continue with all add-ins disabled?
  • Is the issue specific to a particular project?
  • Is the issue specific to a particular user account? (e.g. create a new Administrative account and retest)
  • Is the issue specific to a particular workstation?
  • Is the issue specific to a particular workflow (this can be a bit trickier to identify, but if a user encountering the issue goes to another workstation and finds the same issue (on a system that wasn't previously seeing an issue), this could indicate there is something different in their workflow)?
  • Does the crash occur when the system is put into a simplified startup environment? How to perform a selective startup in Windows

If you still continue to experience crashes let us know.

I'm having the exact same problem and came on here to see if other people were also facing this problem.

I checked the revit.exe and it's all fine.

Couldn't this be a problem due to the virus that spread around the world this week-end

I'm also trying to launch Revit 2016 and it won't open.

Everything worked fine this morning. My colleague also can't open revit 2017, that's when we knew it was a problem that wasn't on a machine.

I too am having the same problem. I had installed Revit 2017.2. Since then I have updated to the Revit 2017.2.1 update (no change.), I have un-installed any windows updates since the beginning of May (no change). I have repaired Revit 2017 through the uninstall dialogue, (no change). I have also tried to launch Revit 2016 and it has the same issue as well and fails to launch.

Other co-workers in the office have experienced slow launches but eventually the program launched. Mine seems to be the only installation that will not launch at all.

I finally got it to launch. I decided to let the splash screen sit there for about 8 mins and it finally went through. I am attaching the latest journal and dump files as requested.

I am finally back to normal. Though not sure what caused it. We also have some un-related server issues on Monday. Our IT team had to reboot our servers several times. I've also uninstalled all windows updates since May 1st. Somewhere in there the slow start up/ crashing problem got fixed. These are the types of problems that drive small firms nuts. You walk in one day and some random Microsoft/Revit updates cause havoc, only to be resolved through what appears to be pure luck. I know there was a real logical fix that happened, but it felt like dumb luck.

Attached is my latest journal file.

Hello everyone, thank you all for responses.
I haven't tried to start Revit since Sunday (when I created this forum). Meanwhile I was working in Photoshop CS6 on Tuesday morning, everything was going fine. Later in the day I tried to open the Photoshop to continue in my work, but strangely happend the same thing as with  Revit. It started loading but nothing after that. For "fun" I tried open Revit and it worked! I was truly amazed, I have no idea how is this possible and why is it happening. Today I tried to open Revit (didn't need to work in it, but to make sure it is running), BUT it didn't. I have restarted my computer and it fixed itself. Apparently I can't have two (quite main) programs running at the same time. I think this is serious question for an IT expert or someone from Microsoft. I did full scan with antivirus with no negative results, so I don't think it can be virus.
I am sorry I haven't found any logical solutions.

Hello!
Thank you for your response. If I will have any similar problems in the future I am sure I will come back to this forum. As I wrote in my answer below, it "fixed" itself apparently, I haven't tried to do anything with it.

I had the exact same problem as you. One of these answers got me thinking about startup programs. I checked which startup program was activated and found that Revit Accelerator was deactivated. I manually started Revit Accelerator and Revit.exe launched right away on next try. I didn't need restart or anything else.

My guess is that when the update have been installed it somehow did not start up Revit Accelerator (I have deactivated it on purpose myself).

I hope this will help everybody with similar problem.
