Revit 2016 Group Problem

When editing a particular model group in a project (312 instances), the program will seemingly freeze.  What actually is happening is that a dialog is being generated that I can't get to to click the Close button.  I've tried a SnapWindows app to see if it was off screen but didn't help.  This also happens on a colleagues computer as well.  So after this happened a couple of times I noticed that when I kill Revit from the Task Manager that you can see the dialog for a brief moment.  I video screen captured my desktop when i did this and was able to get a snapshot of the dialog.  It reads "Attempted an unsupported operation."  Why can't i get to this dialog?  And why can't i change something in the group without getting this dialog?  Thanks for any help.

I am also having this problem on two different projects on two different computers, both running 2016 sp2.

The lockup seems to occur right after clicking the Finish button to get out of Group Edit. The projects are well built and the groups do not contain anything complex. The error dialog is not visible at first but even if it is found and closed the error dialog will reappear once you attempt to close the final view / close the model.

The only solution is to END PROCESS and lose unsaved work. I am hoping someone has a solution out there before this issue appears in other projects.

I did get Autodesk Support to help me with this.  They installed a program called nView Desktop Manager.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/nView-driver.html  There is a setting in the "Windows Manager" section called "Prevent windows from opening off-screen".  They checked it on and then off.  I have no idea why but they said it helps.  Then when we were in Revit we finally got the warnings that would allow the group edit to complete.  After we did this, i haven't had a problem with editing the groups.   Hope it helps.

Use Alt+Space, then M, then Arrow key, and then move your mouse to move the off screen dialog.

The Autodesk support person that helped me said the window was actually stuck behind Revit, not off screen. I'm not sure if your approach would work in my circumstance, but if it occurs again, then I will try it. Thanks.

I think (95% sure) it’s a graphics hardware driver setting / screen res…I’ve seen it happen with other programs and Alt + Spacebar + M + arrow keys shortcut wouldn’t help. Had twice with Illustrator and Premier, a couple of times with Dreamweaver and once with 3DSM. Solution was either to force close the program, force reboot when working with Dreamweaver OR end the last operation using Keyboard Commands or saving with a Ctrl +S which sometimes for some reason did override the hidden dialog box. I never saw that problem after upgrading graphic card and installed latest drivers. Now working with Nvidia and its running perfectly well although untested and not supported

I have seen this before in previous versions and normally a Revit profile rebuild will fix it.  I have one case where it will fix it and the pop up's will again return after the profile is switched and then switched back.  The pop-up are Errors, Dimension References that have become invalid because of the Group edit.  Some Phase changes and modifications to the content within the group edit. Then the person trys to finish and save the group and it apears to hang and not respond.  The pop-up warning and errors are not on either screen.  So I also tried installing the nview desktop.

This seems to work for the short term but is returing time and again for the same user.  So I rolled back the Nvida driver to an Autodesk Certified one "341.21-quadro-grid-desktop-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql".  Again this also worked for a few hours. but I am still seeing this issue.  So I had the person remote desktop into one of our vertualized desktops and got it again.  There are 8 people working on this project only one other had a issue similar to this and rebuilding thir profile did it for them but not with this one user.  I am not sure if it is because we just deployed build: 16.0.1124.0 20160314_0715(x64) Update4 for R2.

So the only thing I can see is it is the user and the process, but that dosn't make sence to cause a pop-under of an error dialogue. 2 different systems same file and same user.  Certified Graphics card driver installed then rebooted the system and opened the project with the same user login, rebuilt the profile and continue to get the "Hang" for a response to the Error dialogues that can not be seen to be responded to.

Has anyone had any other solutions to this problem. We have one machine that seems to have this problem again and again. It does indeed seem to be linked with the Edit Group Command. We have reinstalled Revit, it will be fixed for an hour or so, then it comes back again. We have tried the Alt Spacebar Move with no luck.

There are 2 strategies being applied that are just a work around, and not a solution.

1st is to "dock" the floating tool bar when editing the problem group into the ribbon.... then ......

2nd re-size the Revit window so it is not maximized and is on a different screen than when the edit group command was invoked.

This is allowing the "hidden" dialogues for the notifications of warnings dialogue box to appear on the screen that you had originally had Revit initiate the "Edit" of the group.

for now this seems to be working OK but it is a pain and annoying, especially when someone forgets to do this process on this project.

Hope this helps, at least until they get a patch for it.

Having the group editor box docked seemed to work for a while, then it seemed to undock itself over the weekend. I just told the user to make sure the box is docked before finishing the group. Doing a file, save-as for any file in Revit seems to fix it as well when nothing else works. It is an odd fix, but I saw that in another post.
