Rehosting Floor Opening

I have modelled two floor slabs, one is the structural one and the other is the floor finish, I modeled it as it would be built (i.e, first the concrete slab and then the finishing). In a hurry I placed all the floor openings into the slab above (Floor finish, red in the image), I want to rehost them to the floor below (Concrete Floor, yellow in image).

Is there an easier way to do this? my present workaround is to select the opening, rehost it to the floor slab below(in 3d view) and then move it around in plan to the same place as the original one.

My problem lies in the fact that I cant specify the exact same location on the slab below, I have to arbitrarily place it and then aling it.

I hope I have been clear enough to put this in words. I am struggling with english after switching to german.

Shouldn't the opening cut through both floors? You can just copy the opening to the side, rehost the copy, then align it with the original. Could have used a shaft to cut them both as well.

Thanks for your reply, actually we are in process of editing the floor slab above(Floor Finish) the sketch would be edited to exclude these shafts, (also bathrooms floors would be a different sketch as the material and properties of the bathroom floors are also different).
So in the end the opening would be cutting through only one floor (the other one being non-existent in that place).

Right now my workflow is as follows:

I open the plan view and select the floor opening and then do a create similar and place it on the floor below, and then rotate or move it into place and then delete the one above.

This consumes me a lot of time, i am wondering if I can do it any faster or have dynamo do this for me.

It would consume me the same time to make these as shaft openings, (and these floor openings would be copy monitored by the structural and MEP guys). Also i wouldnt have the hatch as seen in the image below:

Any ideas?

Are you using the Vertical Opening tool?  Did you draw the boundaries in separate openings or in one opening? 

- If the former, it maybe quicker to create a new vertical opening, select the base floor as host, and use pick line to trace the boundary of the existing openings, finish, then remove the old openings. 

- If the latter, you can edit the existing opening, select the base floor as host, copy clip all sketch lines, out, create a new vertical opening, paste align sketch lines, finish, then remove the existing opening.

My bad, its a void opening family I used.

I am unable to rehost the family to the same place below(the floor below).

Is the void opening a floor based family, or a face based family, or sn in place family?

No lucks. You have to do it manually like you are doing or trace use the vertical opening tool and trace the existing boundaries like I said above.

If it is really important to use the same elements (i.e. no change in ElementId ) then you have to place 2 reference- planes aligned with each familyinstance and lock the familyinstance to the reference-planes. Then you can click [Pick New Host ] and select / click anywhere on the new floor. Due to the locks to the reference-planes the familyinstances will be hosted to the new floor in the same place.

If copied familyinstances are alright, then you don't need extra reference-planes.

• move the finish floor to the same level as the concrete floor.
• cut the familyinstances to the clipboard.
• move the finish floor away from the concrete floor ( a fair distance, ca. 2 meters )
• paste aligned to the same place. (familyinstances should be hosted to the concrete floor now)
• move the finish floor back to the original position.

Hi,
I would like to share an easier workaround(worked for me).

Instead of copying and pasting and the other associated steps to it..

What I tried instead was make two reference planes snaping them to the central axis of each of the floor opening family instances (try one first to see if it works in your case too) and at the same time locking them to this alignment.

Then in plan view i hid all model elements except for the openings and the floors (had to also make the view range a bit deeper to see the concrete slab below).

Now select the floor which is hosting floor and hide this too, you are left with the floor below and the openings hosted to the hidden floor.

Select the floor opening family and click re-host family and then click the intersection of the reference planes respectively to the family instance from the first step.

Voila, the family is re-hosted the floor below.
