How to fit railing to trapezoid wall opening? Pls help.

Sadly I think the only solution is to model in place...

Railings do not interact with void geometry or walls... (no junction, add, cut, etc...)

 

Just cheat and make it go through you wall, and do not do a section in it!..

Or go the hard way and model in place!

 

In which case, first tab-select the handrail in order to extend it (tab select, then in contextual ribbon edit trajectory, and ke it go to the sloped wall)

and then model the balusters...

Ok, I might have found another solution for you...

 

Here is the idea. You need an object to act as a host for your balusters to consider different heights.

Revit 2017 is supposed to be able to handle walls as hosts for railings:

So I guess that you should be able to use the face of your wall as a host for your railing, in which case you should be anble to make it adapt by itself!

Hi @Anonymous,

 

Took me three posts but found the solution to your problem.

 

You CAN use a wall as a host for your railing, but you will need to cut your wall in different pieces so that the hosting faces are at the top of the wall. (you pick a wall and not faces for hosting).

 

I have attached illustations.

 

  1. Start drawing you railing, and at the top use the "pick new host button to pick your wall.
  2. Draw the trajectory of your railing using the pick lines tool,
  3. In your railing structure, check that your balusters are attched to your host at the bottom (wall) and your handrail at the top.
  4. select the trajectory, and set it to Flat (it will force your handrail to stay flat, then set its height to the desired one (use Custom if required)!

There it is!

I can't get the it right, pls see railing top and balustrate detached. Pls adise what went wrong.

Are you able to show a video of how you did it. Hoped its not too trouble.

Sorry for the delay, French hours...

 

It looks like your balusters are not attached to your top handrail...

 

I am going to make a quick screencast, and send it!

 

In the meantime, can you check two possibilities:

  1. change the baluster type (as that one might not adapt)
  2. check that your rail1 IS your top rail?
  3. Change your rail from the railing properties to a TOP RAIL in the main properties of the railing, and re-attach the blusters?

not that I know of.... when I drag length of railing nearer the slanted wall, it turned red but when I drag further away, normal normal colour black.

Also, height of railing varies along the slanted wall portion

I think there needs to be a bit of geometry involved to get the railing showing up correctly.  Firstly, the top rail height is not calculated from flat base, nor the peak, but the middle elevation point.  So you may need to lay it out on an elevation with reference plane to determine where to end the sketch line.  Then create a new railing style with a different top rail height than the standard one.  See below, a 1'-6" height railing become 3'-0" when placed on the trapezoid host:

Secondly, you may experience balusters poking up the the top end.  So, edit this railing type and either remove the end baluster, or adjust the offset distance.

Yes, height of railing needs to be locked. Kindly shoe video of how you place reference plane to contrain height of railing.
