Problems plotting to correct papersize

This may not me directly Revit related, but the problems is present in Revit.

Lately we have had massive problems with our plotter, a HP DesignJet XL 3600,  not being able to read the format of what ever drawing we are plotting directly from Revit, or AutoCAD for that matter, when choosing the format from the “Setup…” in the print dialog.

The screenshot shows a custom format, but the story is the same with standard formats A1, A2 etc.

When doing this, the preview looks right, but the output on the plotter is only a fraction of the preview, about an A4 size, as this is the default paper size on the plotter.

I might add at this point, that plotting from PDF works a charm, using the "Choose paper source by PDF page size", and the plotter is able to plot different formats without problems.

The problems started with a rouge windows update that broke/corrupted the somewhat old printdriver on our printserver, that is the theory at this point. This was with an older plotter, a HP T3500, lately we bought a new one, but the problem is still the same.

Back to the problem at hand, the only way I am able to getting the correct format from Revit, is by going directly in the driver, at defining the format.

This is however not an acceptable solution, as it adds extra clicks and settings for the users to remember – and it have worked with the method described first for a long time.

HP has been little to no help, as the plotter is able to find the correct format using PDF, causing them to say that it must be Autodesk’s software which is broken.

Things I have tried:

  • Using PCL and PS drivers
  • Using the latest drivers, and firmware on the plotter
  • Removing all drivers and adding the printer again

Any suggestions what to try next, or have anyone had the same kind of problems?

Sounds like an issue with the windows driver or settings in the plotter.  I often find the manufacturer is little help with these issues. They always blame the software your sending from. Do you contract with a maintenance service\technician for the plotter?

In our office users are not allowed to print directly to printers. They are required to make PDF's and send PDF's for prints. We have found it the most reliable way to get accurate prints.

Can you show these settings?

I can't remember the last time I printed directly from Revit to a plotter.  Because I never did.

Try to select the opposite option of Orientation to see if it will be corrected. Sometime the printer setting of orientation is wrong for it.
