Planting Families with nested DWGs display incorrectly

A few months ago, I created the attached family after exploring multiple options for having a good-looking silhouette and a parametric volume that could be used in elevations and with the correct size information needed in accurate plan views. The solution was to import 2d DWG elevations nested in a planting family, then nested again in the planting family that contains the 2d annotation for plan and the 3d volumes for the simple trunk and tree foliage.

All works well except for the way trees are displayed in elevation.

In the example attached, the number of the tree represents the order in which it was placed in the model. For an unknown reason, trees placed first can obscure elements placed later regardless its position in the model. Tree no. 5 was placed last, but it is in front of the other trees, so it should be obscuring the view of the other. This does not happen, I even placed a wall in the back of the model and it appears in front of the trees with DWGs nested. On the right, a simple family is displaying the depth of field and the mass of the families correctly.

This problem happens in Revit 2022 and 2024.

Hey Angelica, to start with sorry I definitely don't have a solution but I do find the behavior strange and want to know if there's a solution.

Seems like the outlines of the DWG fill always show on top as long as the tree is within the depth of the view. Placing a wall between the front and back trees actually seems to properly mask the further tree from showing which lead me to think that the fills weren't masking or were partially transparent, but seems they are not.

The only way I found to actually workaround the issue was by creating a masking region in the primary family (one with others loaded in) and assigning the visibility to its respective tree shape. This will get very tedious however since each tree shape has countless lines.

The trees are wild colours as I was testing if overriding them with Override Graphics in View would solve it, but seems like not.

2D dwg's in families don't work well.

Some options, create a detailitem with the 2D dwg in them and place them directly on the view (not ideal, if position has to match a 3D placed one)

Or, make small slices of the dwg profiles and adjust the visibility setting of the solid in the family to only show it from the front (see image), you could also place it twice one from the front/back and one for left/right.
