Plan view of Generic model family

We have some stepping stones in a project that are generic model families and are hosted to toposolids. I would like the plan view to show the outline of the stone without being hidden by the topography. I tried adding a filled region to the generic model family and tried creating a separate detail item family and added it to the original generic model family. Neither worked. Any suggestions on how to create an annotation within the generic model family that shows up as a solid stone in plan view even if it is partially below the topography?

How about edit graphic of the topography, set the alpha to 20% or more?

Thanks for the reply, that would work, but there are objects below the toposolid that need to remain hidden. If I change the transparency then they are visible. Transparency is a possible solution if I could figure out how to control a family element by view. For instance some families, like this Basketball net have a "clearance zone" or other object that shows up under the family type in the visibility graphics overrides of the project so I can turn it off or on based on the view. How do I make an extrusion show up as a separate object under the family? This clearance zone is just an extrusion within the family.

Have you tried adding a Symbolic Line(s) to the family? Not sure if they will take priority over the surface. They would only show in the Plan view though since they are directionally challenged ;-).

Yes thanks! symbolic line works, but what I want is to have a basic fill color as well. I was able to use a filled region in a Planting family in another project, but in the generic model family it still looks like half is under the topography.
