Placing Grids for as-built plans

What is the proper practice for placing grids for an existing building? Centerline of all major walls or start at an exterior wall and set grid lines at equal distances?

Thx,

M

This is really a Revit question.

If I can get an as-built plans I use their existing grids.

If not, it depends on the building types.  For small residential, I normally set the exterior grids @ the faces of exterior walls, interior grids @ centerline of major interior partition.  For building with structural columns, I set grids @ column centerlines.  Those are for as-built only.  For new construction they can be totally different.

@ToanDN - thx for the insight. How do you place them for new construction? Just curious.

Copy/Monitor the existing grids from an old drawing linked into your as-built. That's also how we bring in structural grids from a consultant drawing into ours.

For stud framed buildings I place them @ faces of studs.

For concrete or steel structure buildings, @ centers of structural columns.
