Perimeters to modify cast-in collar family

Hi,

I'm creating a cast in collar family. The collar is cast into a slab of concrete and the top is then cut off to run a pipe through the void created within the collar. I've been trying to figure out how I can create a perimeter to "cut the top off". The collar is tapered (wider at the base) with fins running vertically up the side, the cut will need to effect these elements too. There are 3 different sizes I need to create within this family.

Also the best way to void the slab, should I duplicate the elements to create a void within the family or can I just void the interior?

Thanks

Chris

Hi @Anonymous

That family looks good.  In the Collar family, create a new Void Extrusion,

If you create the Void in Plan View beginning at the Ref Plane that defines the Slab thickness, and extend the Void extrusion up to the Ref Plane at the top, that should do it.  Then use the "Cut Geometry" tool to cut the collar.

To get the Collar to cut the slab, I would suggest creating a new Family using a face based Family template, load the Collar, map the Size parameters to new parameters in the new Face based Family, then create a void in the new family that is controlled by the same parameters that control the size of the Collar.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your response. I'm having some trouble trying to cut the geometry of the nested family though.

I've created the original model as a generic family constructed from various components to make adjustable for sizes (still working on this), then I have placed into a specialty equipment family to set the slab depth etc below FFL. In the specialty equipment family I've added the void from FFL upwards to cut the top of the collar off as it would happen in the real world.

However I'm unable to select the nested family when trying to cut geometry on the void, I'm unable to do this once placed into a project too so a little perplexed?

Thanks

Chris

The void should a face based family. In that family, cut the solid with the void and load it in your main family, host it on a face of the nested family that you want to cut and it will cut without any further action.

Attached is the revised 2019 family.  I don't have 2017 but you can do the same follow the steps above.
